## What it does

The file spells out how React code with React Query should look. The agent gets a fixed set of instructions: functional components with hooks, `QueryClient` and `QueryClientProvider` at the app root, separate hooks for queries and mutations, query keys for caching, prefetching, plus loading and error states.

Folder layout is part of the rule: `src/components`, `src/hooks` with `useQueries` and `useMutations` subfolders, `src/pages`, `src/utils`, `src/api`. Extra points cover TypeScript, error boundaries for query errors, React Query DevTools, stale-while-revalidate, optimistic updates for mutations, query invalidation and consistent naming.

The rule matches `**/*`, yet `alwaysApply` is set to `false`, so you opt in rather than getting it everywhere. Worth knowing before you drop it in: if your project already has its own folder layout or runs plain JavaScript, several points will need rewriting.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/react-query-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/react-query-cursorrules-prompt-file.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/react-query-cursorrules-prompt-file.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/react-query-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/react-query-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PatrickJS/awesome-cursorrules/tree/HEAD/rules/react-query-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc

## When to use it
- keep the agent on one React Query style across the repo
- split query and mutation hooks into their own folders
- settle on query key naming and cache behaviour
- add error and loading handling to every query
- wire optimistic updates and invalidation into mutations

## Example prompts
- Create a query hook for the task list under `src/hooks/useQueries` following the React Query rules
- Add a create-task mutation with an optimistic update and query invalidation
- Set up `QueryClientProvider` at the app root and move query keys into a shared module
