# react-native

A Cursor rule that sets mandatory React Native practices: feature-first layout, functional components, hooks and typing. Useful once a project outgrows a flat folder.

## What it does

The file `.cursor/rules/react-native.mdc` plugs into Cursor and applies to `**/*.{js,jsx,ts,tsx}`. Inside is a list of code requirements: organize by feature rather than by file type, keep one component per file, and co-locate styles and tests next to the component.

Styles live in a separate `.styles.ts` built with `StyleSheet.create` instead of inline objects. Imports go through absolute aliases declared in `tsconfig.json` — `@components/*`, `@features/*`, `@utils/*` and others — so you stop stacking `../../..`. Class components are treated as deprecated; functions and hooks only.

For global state it recommends Redux Toolkit, with Zustand or Jotai allowed for simpler cases. Navigation runs through React Navigation in a dedicated `navigation/` folder. One catch: you have to set up the import aliases yourself, otherwise the rule will demand paths your project does not have.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/react-native.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/react-native.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/react-native.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/react-native.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/react-native.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sanjeed5/awesome-cursor-rules-mdc/tree/HEAD/rules-mdc/react-native.mdc

## When to use it
- organize code by feature instead of by file type
- move styles out of JSX into separate `.styles.ts` files
- drop long relative paths in favour of import aliases
- replace class components with functions and hooks
- extract repeated stateful logic into custom hooks

## Example prompts
- lay out the auth screens using the feature-first structure
- move this component's styles into a separate file with StyleSheet.create
- rewrite this class component as a functional one with hooks

# React Native Best Practices

This guide outlines the mandatory practices for React Native development. Adherence ensures a consistent, high-quality, and scalable codebase.

## 1. Code Organization and Structure

Adopt a feature-based structure with clear separation of concerns.

### 1.1. Feature-First Directory Structure

Organize code by feature, not by type. Each component, screen, or hook should reside in its own directory with co-located styles and tests.

**✅ GOOD:**

```
src/
├── features/
│   ├── Auth/
│   │   ├── components/
│   │   │   ├── LoginForm/
│   │   │   │   ├── LoginForm.tsx
│   │   │   │   ├── LoginForm.styles.ts
│   │   │   │   └── LoginForm.test.tsx
│   │   ├── screens/
│   │   │   ├── LoginScreen/
│   │   │   │   ├── LoginScreen.tsx
│   │   │   │   ├── LoginScreen.styles.ts
│   │   │   │   └── LoginScreen.test.tsx
│   │   └── hooks/
│   │       └── useAuth.ts
│   ├── Profile/
│   └── ...
├── components/ # Shared, generic UI components
│   ├── Button/
│   │   ├── Button.tsx
│   │   ├── Button.styles.ts
│   │   └── Button.test.tsx
│   └── ...
├── navigation/ # App-level navigation config
├── services/   # Global API clients, utility services
├── utils/      # Generic helper functions
├── types/      # Global TypeScript types
└── App.tsx
```

### 1.2. File Naming and Co-location

Use PascalCase for components/screens, camelCase for hooks/utilities. Co-locate related files.

**❌ BAD:**

```
// components/Button.js
// components/buttonStyles.js
// components/buttonTests.js
```

**✅ GOOD:**

```
// components/Button/Button.tsx
// components/Button/Button.styles.ts
// components/Button/Button.test.tsx
```

### 1.3. Absolute Imports

Configure and use absolute imports to avoid deeply nested relative paths.

**❌ BAD:**

```typescript
import { Button } from '../../../../components/Button/Button';
```

**✅ GOOD:**

```typescript
import { Button } from '@components/Button/Button';
```

**`tsconfig.json` (or `jsconfig.json`):**

```json
{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "baseUrl": ".",
    "paths": {
      "@components/*": ["src/components/*"],
      "@features/*": ["src/features/*"],
      "@navigation/*": ["src/navigation/*"],
      "@services/*": ["src/services/*"],
      "@utils/*": ["src/utils/*"],
      "@types/*": ["src/types/*"]
    }
  }
}
```

### 1.4. One Component Per File

Each `.tsx` file must export exactly one React component as its default export. Pure stateless components can be co-located if they are tightly coupled and small.

## 2. Component Architecture

Prioritize functional components, hooks, and strong typing.

### 2.1. Functional Components with Hooks

Always use functional components and React Hooks. Class components are deprecated.

**❌ BAD:**

```typescript
import React, { Component } from 'react';
class MyComponent extends Component { /* ... */ }
```

**✅ GOOD:**

```typescript
import React, { useState, useEffect } from 'react';
const MyComponent: React.FC = () => { /* ... */ };
```

### 2.2. Custom Hooks for Reusable Logic

Extract stateful logic into custom hooks for reusability and testability.

**❌ BAD:**

```typescript
const MyComponent: React.FC = () => {
  const [count, setCount] = useState(0);
  useEffect(() => { /* complex logic */ }, [count]);
