## What it does

This rule guides Cursor when generating or refactoring React code with MobX. It enforces explicit state definitions inside class constructors using `makeObservable` instead of legacy decorators. Individual domain stores are combined into a single `RootStore` and provided via React Context with a custom `useStore` hook.

Component rendering relies on `mobx-react-lite`. The rule prompts the assistant to wrap functional components with `observer` and defer property access directly to JSX, avoiding unnecessary re-renders. It also restricts list keys, rejecting array indices.

Legacy decorators like `@observable` conflict with modern tooling, so the rule pushes your codebase toward explicit constructor declarations compatible with the React Compiler.

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/react-mobx.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/react-mobx.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/react-mobx.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sanjeed5/awesome-cursor-rules-mdc/tree/HEAD/rules-mdc/react-mobx.mdc

## When to use it
- refactor class stores from legacy decorators to `makeObservable`
- set up a `RootStore` pattern with React Context injection
- prevent excess re-renders using granular `observer` wrappers
- enforce late de-referencing of observable values in JSX

## Example prompts
- Generate a new `CartStore` class using `makeObservable` and define actions
- Wrap this list item component in `observer` from `mobx-react-lite`
- Create `StoreContext` and the `useStore` hook for `RootStore` injection

# react-mobx Best Practices

MobX, paired with React, offers a powerful and low-boilerplate approach to state management. By adhering to these guidelines, your team will build predictable, scalable applications ready for React 19 and the React Compiler.

## 1. Store Design and Organization

Organize your application state into domain-specific stores, composed into a single root store.

### 1.1. Class-Based Stores with `makeObservable`

Define each domain area as a class. Use `makeObservable` in the constructor to explicitly declare observables, computed values, and actions. This is the modern, explicit way to define your reactive state.

❌ **BAD: Implicit MobX decorators (legacy)**
```javascript
// src/stores/UserStore.js
import { observable, action, computed } from 'mobx';
class UserStore {
  @observable users = [];
  @observable isLoading = false;
  @computed get activeUsers() {
    return this.users.filter(u => u.isActive);
  }
  @action addUser(user) {
    this.users.push(user);
  }
}
```

✅ **GOOD: Explicit `makeObservable` (modern)**
```typescript
// src/stores/UserStore.ts
import { makeObservable, observable, action, computed } from 'mobx';
interface User {
  id: string;
  name: string;
  isActive: boolean;
}
export class UserStore {
  users: User[] = [];
  isLoading: boolean = false;
  constructor() {
    makeObservable(this, {
      users: observable,
      isLoading: observable,
      activeUsers: computed,
      addUser: action,
      fetchUsers: action,
    });
  }
  get activeUsers(): User[] {
    return this.users.filter(u => u.isActive);
  }
  addUser(user: User) {
    this.users.push(user);
  }
  async fetchUsers() {
    this.isLoading = true;
    // Simulate API call
    await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 500));
    this.users = [{ id: '1', name: 'Alice', isActive: true }];
    this.isLoading = false;
  }
}
```

### 1.2. Root Store Composition

Create a `RootStore` that instantiates and holds references to all other stores. This provides a single entry point for your application's state and facilitates inter-store communication.

```typescript
// src/stores/RootStore.ts
import { UserStore } from './UserStore';
import { AuthStore } from './AuthStore';
export class RootStore {
  userStore: UserStore;
  authStore: AuthStore;
  constructor() {
    this.authStore = new AuthStore(this); // Pass root store for cross-store access
    this.userStore = new UserStore();
  }
}
// Export a singleton instance for convenience, or create one in your app entry.
export const rootStore = new RootStore();
```

### 1.3. Consistent Naming Conventions

Maintain clear naming for stores, observables, and actions.

*   **Stores**: PascalCase (e.g., `UserStore`, `ProductStore`).
*   **Observable Fields**: camelCase (e.g., `users`, `isLoading`).
*   **Computed Values**: camelCase, often prefixed with `get` if a getter (e.g., `get activeUsers`).
*   **Actions**: Verb-prefixed camelCase (e.g., `addUser`, `fetchUsers`).

## 2. Context-Based Store Injection

Avoid prop-drilling by providing your root store via React Context and consuming it with a custom hook.

```typescript
// src/contexts/StoreContext.ts
import React, { createContext, useContext } from 'react';
import { RootStore, rootStore as defaultRootStore } from '../stores/RootStore';
export const StoreContext = createContext<RootStore>(defaultRootStore);
export const StoreProvider: React.FC<{ store?: RootStore }> = ({ children, store }) => {
  return (
    <StoreContext.Provider value={store || defaultRootStore}>
      {children}
    </StoreContext.Provider>
  );
};
export const useStore = (): RootStore => {
  const store = useContext(StoreContext);
  if (!store) {
````
