## What it does

This rule instructs Cursor to adopt a QA engineer persona. When reporting defects, the assistant formats the output with a fixed layout: title, summary, environment details, reproduction steps, expected behavior, and actual results. It also reserves blocks for console errors, references to screenshots, and suggested fixes.

Defects are categorized across five severity levels: Critical, High, Medium, Low, and Trivial. The prompt requires isolating each bug into a single entry and recording exact software versions. The frontmatter specifies `alwaysApply: false`. Because of this setting, Cursor will not attach the reporting template to every regular coding request. The output structure easily adapts to Jira or GitHub Issues.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/qa-bug-report-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/qa-bug-report-cursorrules-prompt-file.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/qa-bug-report-cursorrules-prompt-file.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/qa-bug-report-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/qa-bug-report-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

## When to use it
- format structured bug reports following a QA template
- classify defect severity using five defined levels
- document reproducible steps alongside environment parameters
- include console logs and fix suggestions for developers

## Example prompts
- Draft a bug report: the signup submit button fails to respond in Firefox
- Create a bug report for a payment checkout crash on repeated clicks
- Format a defect report including reproduction steps and browser console errors
