# python-github-setup-cursorrules-prompt-file

Tells Cursor how to write and review Python code: style, tests, GitHub Pull Requests and GitHub Actions CI. Useful when the team has no shared rulebook.

## What it does

The rule spells out how Cursor should handle Python code in your project. It sets 4-space indentation, a 120-character line limit, required comments and docstrings following the Google Python Style Guide. Variables and functions use snake_case, classes use PascalCase.

Processes get their own section. Tests are mandatory with an 80% coverage target, unit and integration types, pytest as the framework. Reviews run through GitHub Pull Requests, branching follows GitHub Flow, commit messages follow Conventional Commits. Black handles formatting, Pylint handles linting against PEP 8. CI runs on GitHub Actions with the config at `.github/workflows/main.yml`.

Some parts are tied to one specific project: a Python file-organization tool that classifies content with AI. The listed libraries include watchdog, spacy, PyPDF2, python-docx, pandas, transformers, torch and scikit-learn. If your project looks different, rewrite those lines — otherwise Cursor will keep suggesting dependencies you do not have. Secrets live in environment variables, config in `.env` via python-dotenv.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/python-github-setup-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/python-github-setup-cursorrules-prompt-file.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/python-github-setup-cursorrules-prompt-file.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/python-github-setup-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/python-github-setup-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PatrickJS/awesome-cursorrules/tree/HEAD/rules/python-github-setup-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc

## When to use it
- set one Python style across the team
- make tests and a coverage target mandatory
- route reviews through GitHub Pull Requests
- pin commit format and branching strategy
- keep secrets in environment variables

## Example prompts
- Add a new module for document classification following the project rules
- Check this file against PEP 8 and our naming conventions
- Set up the GitHub Actions workflow from our config
