## What it does

The rule frames Cursor as a Python developer working with command-line tools and the file system. Its guidance covers difficult debugging work and attention to code performance.

The rule targets `**/*`, while `alwaysApply` is set to `false`, so it does not run for every request by default. Add it at `.cursor/rules/python-developer-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc` in the project. Without selecting or applying the rule, its context may not be used.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/python-developer-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/python-developer-cursorrules-prompt-file.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/python-developer-cursorrules-prompt-file.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/python-developer-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/python-developer-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PatrickJS/awesome-cursorrules/tree/HEAD/rules/python-developer-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc

## When to use it
- set a Python development context in Cursor
- investigate a difficult Python error
- work with command-line tools
- handle project file-system operations
- review Python code for performance issues

## Example prompts
- Investigate this Python error and suggest a fix.
- Check this script’s command-line and file-system operations.
- Find performance issues in this Python code and propose changes.
