## What it does

This rule instructs the agent to act as a technical writer specializing in pull request documentation. It formats PR templates in Markdown with dedicated sections for change motivation and testing notes. System impacts stay visible to reviewers.

The file includes concrete starting templates for GitHub, GitLab, and Azure DevOps. Each layout has ready checklists for code quality and issue trackers. Guidance covers adjusting fields for specific tech stacks.

Because `alwaysApply` is set to `false`, Cursor will not load this file into every prompt automatically. You call upon it directly when drafting repository guidelines.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/pr-template-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/pr-template-cursorrules-prompt-file.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/pr-template-cursorrules-prompt-file.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/pr-template-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/pr-template-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PatrickJS/awesome-cursorrules/tree/HEAD/rules/pr-template-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc

## When to use it
- generate structured PR templates in Markdown
- standardize pull request descriptions across team repositories
- integrate verification checklists into GitHub, GitLab, or Azure DevOps
- document manual and automated testing evidence before code review

## Example prompts
- Generate a GitHub pull request template with a testing checklist
- Create a GitLab MR template that includes deployment verification steps
- Draft an Azure DevOps PR template tailored for bug fixes
