## What it does

The rule helps organize a report page by importance: put key metrics near the top, supporting analysis in the main area, and filters or navigation in their own places. It matches chart types to analytical tasks: line charts for trends over time, for instance, and scatter plots for relationships or outliers.

Its guidance also covers page layouts, tabs, bookmarks, buttons, and tooltips. For a single-page dashboard, it recommends keeping the visual count within 6–8. Pie and donut charts are intended for 5–7 categories; for clearer comparisons across more parts, the rule points to stacked bars. That category limit matters when planning a crowded report.

GitHub Copilot applies the rule to `pbix`, `md`, `json`, and `txt` files matching `**/*.{pbix,md,json,txt}`. Place it at `.github/instructions/power-bi-report-design-best-practices.instructions.md`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Power BI

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/power-bi-report-design-best-practices.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/power-bi-report-design-best-practices.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move applyTo from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/power-bi-report-design-best-practices.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply. Move applyTo from the source into globs, or the rule will not attach on its own

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/power-bi-report-design-best-practices.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/power-bi-report-design-best-practices.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/instructions/power-bi-report-design-best-practices.instructions.md

## When to use it
- Choose a chart for category comparisons or time trends
- Arrange metrics, analysis, and filters on a report page
- Plan navigation across report pages and tabs
- Add explanatory tooltips to visuals

## Example prompts
- Help me arrange KPIs, charts, and filters on this Power BI report page.
- Recommend a chart for comparing category sales across several time periods.
- Suggest page navigation and a tooltip for this visual.

# Power BI Report Design and Visualization Best Practices

## Overview
This document provides comprehensive instructions for designing effective, accessible, and performant Power BI reports and dashboards following Microsoft's official guidance and user experience best practices.

## Fundamental Design Principles

### 1. Information Architecture
**Visual Hierarchy** - Organize information by importance:
- **Primary**: Key metrics, KPIs, most critical insights (top-left, header area)
- **Secondary**: Supporting details, trends, comparisons (main body)
- **Tertiary**: Filters, controls, navigation elements (sidebars, footers)

**Content Structure**:
```
Report Page Layout:
┌─────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Header: Title, KPIs, Key Metrics    │
├─────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Main Content Area                   │
│ ┌─────────────┐ ┌─────────────────┐ │
│ │  Primary    │ │  Supporting     │ │
│ │  Visual     │ │  Visuals        │ │
│ └─────────────┘ └─────────────────┘ │
├─────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Footer: Filters, Navigation, Notes  │
└─────────────────────────────────────┘
```

### 2. User Experience Principles
**Clarity**: Every element should have a clear purpose and meaning
**Consistency**: Use consistent styling, colors, and interactions across all reports
**Context**: Provide sufficient context for users to interpret data correctly
**Action**: Guide users toward actionable insights and decisions

## Chart Type Selection Guidelines

### 1. Comparison Visualizations
```
Bar/Column Charts:
✅ Comparing categories or entities
✅ Ranking items by value
✅ Showing changes over discrete time periods
✅ When category names are long (use horizontal bars)
Best Practices:
- Start axis at zero for accurate comparison
- Sort categories by value for ranking
- Use consistent colors within category groups
- Limit to 7-10 categories for readability
Example Use Cases:
- Sales by product category
- Revenue by region
- Employee count by department
- Customer satisfaction by service type
```

```
Line Charts:
✅ Showing trends over continuous time periods
✅ Comparing multiple metrics over time
✅ Identifying patterns, seasonality, cycles
✅ Forecasting and projection scenarios
Best Practices:
- Use consistent time intervals
- Start Y-axis at zero when showing absolute values
- Use different line styles for multiple series
- Include data point markers for sparse data
Example Use Cases:
- Monthly sales trends
- Website traffic over time
- Stock price movements
- Performance metrics tracking
```

### 2. Composition Visualizations
```
Pie/Donut Charts:
✅ Parts-of-whole relationships
✅ Maximum 5-7 categories
✅ When percentages are more important than absolute values
✅ Simple composition scenarios
