## What it does

This instruction file guides GitHub Copilot in generating Model Context Protocol servers using the official PHP SDK developed with The PHP Foundation. It teaches the AI agent the expected project layout, separating tools, resources, and prompts under `src/`.

Copilot learns to build capabilities using native PHP attributes such as `#[McpTool]`, `#[McpResource]`, and `#[Schema]`. It constructs server entry points through `Server::builder()`, wires up `StdioTransport`, and configures PSR-16 caching to speed up discovery.

Your environment must run PHP 8.2 or later with the `mcp/sdk` Composer package installed. Without that package, generated classes cannot execute. The rule triggers automatically on any `**/*.php` file.

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/php-mcp-server.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/php-mcp-server.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move applyTo from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/php-mcp-server.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply. Move applyTo from the source into globs, or the rule will not attach on its own

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/php-mcp-server.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/php-mcp-server.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/instructions/php-mcp-server.instructions.md

## When to use it
- structure a PHP MCP server project with Composer
- declare MCP tools using `#[McpTool]` and parameter schemas
- set up `Server::builder()` with PSR-16 attribute discovery caching
- expose URI-based resources using `#[McpResourceTemplate]`

## Example prompts
- Create an MCP tool class that processes image uploads using ImageContent
- Write a `server.php` entry point using StdioTransport and automatic attribute discovery
- Add a configuration resource accessible at `config://app/settings`

# PHP MCP Server Development Best Practices

This guide provides best practices for building Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers using the official PHP SDK maintained in collaboration with The PHP Foundation.

## Installation and Setup

### Install via Composer

```bash
composer require mcp/sdk
```

### Project Structure

Organize your PHP MCP server project:

```
my-mcp-server/
├── composer.json
├── src/
│   ├── Tools/
│   │   ├── Calculator.php
│   │   └── FileManager.php
│   ├── Resources/
│   │   ├── ConfigProvider.php
│   │   └── DataProvider.php
│   ├── Prompts/
│   │   └── PromptGenerator.php
│   └── Server.php
├── server.php           # Server entry point
└── tests/
    └── ToolsTest.php
```

### Composer Configuration

```json
{
    "name": "your-org/mcp-server",
    "description": "MCP Server for...",
    "type": "project",
    "require": {
        "php": "^8.2",
        "mcp/sdk": "^0.1"
    },
    "require-dev": {
        "phpunit/phpunit": "^10.0"
    },
    "autoload": {
        "psr-4": {
            "App\\": "src/"
        }
    }
}
```

## Server Implementation

### Basic Server with Attribute Discovery

Create your server entry point:

```php
#!/usr/bin/env php
<?php
declare(strict_types=1);
require_once __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';
use Mcp\Server;
use Mcp\Server\Transport\StdioTransport;
$server = Server::builder()
    ->setServerInfo('My MCP Server', '1.0.0')
    ->setDiscovery(__DIR__, ['.'])
    ->build();
$transport = new StdioTransport();
$server->run($transport);
```

### Server with Caching

Use PSR-16 cache for better performance:

```php
use Symfony\Component\Cache\Adapter\FilesystemAdapter;
use Symfony\Component\Cache\Psr16Cache;
$cache = new Psr16Cache(new FilesystemAdapter('mcp-discovery'));
$server = Server::builder()
    ->setServerInfo('My MCP Server', '1.0.0')
    ->setDiscovery(
        basePath: __DIR__,
        scanDirs: ['.', 'src'],
        excludeDirs: ['vendor', 'tests'],
        cache: $cache
    )
    ->build();
```

### Manual Registration

Register capabilities programmatically:

```php
use App\Tools\Calculator;
use App\Resources\Config;
$server = Server::builder()
    ->setServerInfo('My MCP Server', '1.0.0')
    ->addTool([Calculator::class, 'add'], 'add')
    ->addTool([Calculator::class, 'multiply'], 'multiply')
    ->addResource([Config::class, 'getSettings'], 'config://app/settings')
    ->build();
```

## Tool Development

### Simple Tool with Attribute

```php
<?php
namespace App\Tools;
use Mcp\Capability\Attribute\McpTool;
class Calculator
{
    /**
     * Adds two numbers together.
     *
     * @param int $a The first number
     * @param int $b The second number
     * @return int The sum of the two numbers
     */
    #[McpTool]
    public function add(int $a, int $b): int
    {
        return $a + $b;
    }
}
```

### Tool with Custom Name

```php
use Mcp\Capability\Attribute\McpTool;
class FileManager
{
    /**
     * Reads file content from the filesystem.
     */
    #[McpTool(name: 'read_file')]
    public function readFileContent(string $path): string
    {
        if (!file_exists($path)) {
            throw new \InvalidArgumentException("File not found: {$path}");
        }
        return file_get_contents($path);
    }
}
```

### Tool with Validation and Schema

```php
use Mcp\Capability\Attribute\{McpTool, Schema};
class UserManager
{
    #[McpTool(name: 'create_user')]
    public function createUser(
        #[Schema(format: 'email')]
````
