## What it does

The rule is aimed at Next.js projects using the App Router. It directs route-specific components to `app`, shared components to `components`, and helpers to `lib`; directory names use lowercase kebab case. Server Components are the default, while client components must be marked with `use client` and placed behind `Suspense` with a fallback.

It covers image handling with WebP, size data, and lazy loading, plus restrained use of `useEffect` and `setState`. Data fetching should include caching, loading states, and error handling. Forms use server-side checks and `Zod`; routes can use dynamic and parallel patterns. The rule targets `*.tsx`, `*.ts`, `src/**/*.ts`, and `src/**/*.tsx`. Form guidance depends on `Zod`.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/nextjs.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/nextjs.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/nextjs.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/nextjs.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/nextjs.md`

## When to use it
- organize a Next.js project around the App Router
- decide when a component should run on the server
- add loading and error states to routes
- shape data fetching with caching
- validate forms with Zod

## Example prompts
- Review this screen against the Next.js App Router rules.
- Tell me whether this component needs `use client` or can stay server-rendered.
- Add loading, error, and server-side validation states to this form with `Zod`.

# Next.js Best Practices

## Project Structure
- Use the App Router directory structure
- Place components in `app` directory for route-specific components
- Place shared components in `components` directory
- Place utilities and helpers in `lib` directory
- Use lowercase with dashes for directories (e.g., `components/auth-wizard`)

## Components
- Use Server Components by default
- Mark client components explicitly with 'use client'
- Wrap client components in Suspense with fallback
- Use dynamic loading for non-critical components
- Implement proper error boundaries
- Place static content and interfaces at file end

## Performance
- Optimize images: Use WebP format, size data, lazy loading
- Minimize use of 'useEffect' and 'setState'
- Favor Server Components (RSC) where possible
- Use dynamic loading for non-critical components
- Implement proper caching strategies

## Data Fetching
- Use Server Components for data fetching when possible
- Implement proper error handling for data fetching
- Use appropriate caching strategies
- Handle loading and error states appropriately

## Routing
- Use the App Router conventions
- Implement proper loading and error states for routes
- Use dynamic routes appropriately
- Handle parallel routes when needed

## Forms and Validation
- Use Zod for form validation
- Implement proper server-side validation
- Handle form errors appropriately
- Show loading states during form submission

## State Management
- Minimize client-side state
- Use React Context sparingly
- Prefer server state when possible
- Implement proper loading states
