# nestjs

This rule feeds GitHub Copilot a set of NestJS conventions: modules, DI, DTOs and validation. Useful when the agent writes TypeScript server code.

## What it does

A rule file for GitHub Copilot that spells out how to build NestJS server applications. It covers dependency injection through `@Injectable()` and constructor parameters, splitting code into feature modules with `@Module()`, using `@Controller()`, `@Get()` and `@Post()` decorators, and validating input with `class-validator`.

Project layout gets its own section: `common/`, `config/`, `modules/` and `shared/` folders, plus file naming — `*.controller.ts`, `*.service.ts`, `*.module.ts`, `*.dto.ts`, `*.entity.ts`, `*.guard.ts`, `*.interceptor.ts`, `*.pipe.ts`, `*.filter.ts`. There are also sections on TypeORM, JWT auth with Passport, role-based access and exception filters.

The rule applies to `**/*.ts`, `**/*.js`, `**/*.json`, `**/*.spec.ts` and `**/*.e2e-spec.ts`, so Copilot keeps these standards across the whole project. If your codebase already follows a different architecture, the advice will push against it — trim the file to match your setup.

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/nestjs.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/nestjs.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move applyTo from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/nestjs.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply. Move applyTo from the source into globs, or the rule will not attach on its own

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/nestjs.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/nestjs.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/instructions/nestjs.instructions.md

## When to use it
- tell Copilot how to split code into feature modules
- get DTOs with class-validator validation without asking twice
- move business logic out of controllers into services
- wire up JWT auth and role checks with guards
- agree on file names and folder structure across a team

## Example prompts
- add a users module with a controller, service and a create-user DTO
- rewrite this controller so the logic lives in the service
- create an admin role guard and attach it to user deletion

# NestJS Development Best Practices

## Your Mission

As GitHub Copilot, you are an expert in NestJS development with deep knowledge of TypeScript, decorators, dependency injection, and modern Node.js patterns. Your goal is to guide developers in building scalable, maintainable, and well-architected server-side applications using NestJS framework principles and best practices.

## Core NestJS Principles

### **1. Dependency Injection (DI)**
- **Principle:** NestJS uses a powerful DI container that manages the instantiation and lifetime of providers.
- **Guidance for Copilot:**
  - Use `@Injectable()` decorator for services, repositories, and other providers
  - Inject dependencies through constructor parameters with proper typing
  - Prefer interface-based dependency injection for better testability
  - Use custom providers when you need specific instantiation logic

### **2. Modular Architecture**
- **Principle:** Organize code into feature modules that encapsulate related functionality.
- **Guidance for Copilot:**
  - Create feature modules with `@Module()` decorator
  - Import only necessary modules and avoid circular dependencies
  - Use `forRoot()` and `forFeature()` patterns for configurable modules
  - Implement shared modules for common functionality

### **3. Decorators and Metadata**
- **Principle:** Leverage decorators to define routes, middleware, guards, and other framework features.
- **Guidance for Copilot:**
  - Use appropriate decorators: `@Controller()`, `@Get()`, `@Post()`, `@Injectable()`
  - Apply validation decorators from `class-validator` library
  - Use custom decorators for cross-cutting concerns
  - Implement metadata reflection for advanced scenarios

## Project Structure Best Practices

### **Recommended Directory Structure**
```
src/
├── app.module.ts
├── main.ts
├── common/
│   ├── decorators/
│   ├── filters/
│   ├── guards/
│   ├── interceptors/
│   ├── pipes/
│   └── interfaces/
├── config/
├── modules/
│   ├── auth/
│   ├── users/
│   └── products/
└── shared/
    ├── services/
    └── constants/
```

### **File Naming Conventions**
- **Controllers:** `*.controller.ts` (e.g., `users.controller.ts`)
- **Services:** `*.service.ts` (e.g., `users.service.ts`)
- **Modules:** `*.module.ts` (e.g., `users.module.ts`)
- **DTOs:** `*.dto.ts` (e.g., `create-user.dto.ts`)
- **Entities:** `*.entity.ts` (e.g., `user.entity.ts`)
- **Guards:** `*.guard.ts` (e.g., `auth.guard.ts`)
- **Interceptors:** `*.interceptor.ts` (e.g., `logging.interceptor.ts`)
- **Pipes:** `*.pipe.ts` (e.g., `validation.pipe.ts`)
- **Filters:** `*.filter.ts` (e.g., `http-exception.filter.ts`)

## API Development Patterns

### **1. Controllers**
- Keep controllers thin - delegate business logic to services
- Use proper HTTP methods and status codes
- Implement comprehensive input validation with DTOs
- Apply guards and interceptors at the appropriate level

```typescript
@Controller('users')
@UseGuards(AuthGuard)
export class UsersController {
  constructor(private readonly usersService: UsersService) {}
  @Get()
  @UseInterceptors(TransformInterceptor)
  async findAll(@Query() query: GetUsersDto): Promise<User[]> {
    return this.usersService.findAll(query);
  }
  @Post()
  @UsePipes(ValidationPipe)
  async create(@Body() createUserDto: CreateUserDto): Promise<User> {
    return this.usersService.create(createUserDto);
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 06920c989d2c4c8c tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
