## What it does

The `.cursor/rules/microsoft-teams.mdc` file loads into Cursor and sets the boundaries your agent works within on Microsoft Teams app code. It covers four areas: code organization, common patterns and anti-patterns, tab performance, and pitfalls in development and publishing.

On structure, the rule points to `Microsoft 365 Agents Toolkit` (formerly Teams Toolkit) as the starting point — it ships the official file layout, linting rules and CI/CD pipelines. TypeScript is treated as mandatory. Tabs should use Fluent UI React from `@fluentui/react-components`, bots and message extensions should send Adaptive Cards through `CardFactory`, and Microsoft 365 data should come from the Microsoft Graph SDK rather than direct SharePoint REST calls.

A separate section deals with speed: lazy-load heavy components with `lazy` and `Suspense`, paginate and cache instead of pulling every record at once. The pitfalls section names two: skipping the Teams App Store validation checklist, and sloppy SSO or permission scopes. If your project already runs a different UI stack, the rule will push back on every tab edit — worth deciding up front whose style wins.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/microsoft-teams.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/microsoft-teams.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/microsoft-teams.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/microsoft-teams.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/microsoft-teams.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sanjeed5/awesome-cursor-rules-mdc/tree/HEAD/rules-mdc/microsoft-teams.mdc

## When to use it
- scaffold a Teams app with build and deploy scripts already wired
- move bot logic from JavaScript to TypeScript with explicit types
- build a tab UI from Fluent UI components
- send structured cards from a bot instead of plain text
- read Microsoft 365 data through Graph SDK instead of SharePoint REST

## Example prompts
- Scaffold a Teams app with Microsoft 365 Agents Toolkit for a tab and a bot
- Rewrite the bot message handler in TypeScript with TurnContext and Activity types
- Replace direct SharePoint calls with Microsoft Graph SDK requests

# microsoft-teams Best Practices

Microsoft Teams is the backbone of enterprise collaboration. To build high-quality, maintainable, and performant applications, adhere to these definitive guidelines.

## 1. Code Organization and Structure

Always start with a standardized project structure and leverage modern tooling.

### ✅ Use Microsoft 365 Agents Toolkit for Project Scaffolding

The `Microsoft 365 Agents Toolkit` (formerly Teams Toolkit) provides the official project structure, linting rules, and CI/CD pipelines. It's the fastest way to a compliant and maintainable app.

❌ BAD: Manual project setup, inconsistent file organization.
```typescript
// Don't manually create files and folders.
// This leads to inconsistent project structures.
// src/components/MyComponent.tsx
// src/api/teamsApi.ts
// ...
```

✅ GOOD: Generate with the toolkit.
```bash
# Use the VS Code extension or CLI
# This ensures a consistent, maintainable structure
# and pre-configured build/deploy scripts.
npm install -g @microsoft/teamsfx-cli # Or use the VS Code extension
teamsfx new --app-name my-teams-app --capabilities tab,bot
```

### ✅ Prefer TypeScript for All Development

TypeScript is mandatory for type safety, better tooling, and improved code quality.

❌ BAD: JavaScript for Teams app logic.
```javascript
// myBotLogic.js
function handleMessage(context, message) {
    // No type checking, prone to runtime errors
    if (message.text.startsWith('/hello')) {
        context.sendActivity(`Hello ${context.activity.from.name}!`);
    }
}
```

✅ GOOD: TypeScript with explicit types.
```typescript
// myBotLogic.ts
import { TurnContext, Activity } from 'botbuilder';
export async function handleMessage(context: TurnContext, activity: Activity): Promise<void> {
    if (activity.text?.startsWith('/hello')) {
        await context.sendActivity(`Hello ${activity.from?.name || 'there'}!`);
    }
}
```

## 2. Common Patterns and Anti-patterns

Adopt established patterns for UI, interaction, and data handling.

### ✅ Use Fluent UI React Components for Tabs

Ensure a native look and feel. Fluent UI is the official design system for Microsoft 365.

❌ BAD: Custom CSS frameworks or generic UI libraries.
```tsx
// MyTab.tsx
import React from 'react';
import { Button } from 'some-generic-ui-lib'; // Inconsistent look and feel
const MyTab: React.FC = () => {
  return <Button className="my-custom-button">Click Me</Button>;
};
```

✅ GOOD: Fluent UI React components.
```tsx
// MyTab.tsx
import React from 'react';
import { Button, Field } from '@fluentui/react-components'; // Native Teams experience
const MyTab: React.FC = () => {
  return (
    <Field label="Your Name">
      <Button appearance="primary">Submit</Button>
    </Field>
  );
};
```

### ✅ Leverage Adaptive Cards for Bots and Message Extensions

Adaptive Cards provide rich, platform-agnostic UI for conversational experiences.

❌ BAD: Sending plain text or basic HTML from bots.
```typescript
// bot.ts
await context.sendActivity('Here is your task: Buy milk. Due: Tomorrow.');
```

✅ GOOD: Adaptive Cards for structured information.
```typescript
// bot.ts
import { CardFactory } from 'botbuilder';
