# kotlin-mcp-server

A rule with patterns for building MCP servers in Kotlin on top of the official io.modelcontextprotocol:kotlin-sdk. It gives Copilot the context it needs to generate server code.

## What it does

This rule teaches Copilot how to structure MCP servers in Kotlin. It covers the basics: creating a server with the `Server` class, adding tools via `server.addTool()`, resources via `server.addResource()`, and prompts via `server.addPrompt()`. Since all SDK operations are suspending functions, the rule also shows coroutine usage, including parallel work with `async`.

Transport gets its own section. Stdio uses `StdioServerTransport` for local setups. SSE runs on Ktor with `embeddedServer(Netty, port = 8080)` and the `mcp` plugin. Error handling uses `try/catch` with `IllegalArgumentException` and `require()` to validate inputs before returning a `CallToolResult` with `isError = true` when something fails.

The rule applies to `**/*.kt`, `**/*.kts`, `**/build.gradle.kts`, and `**/settings.gradle.kts`. The `io.modelcontextprotocol:kotlin-sdk` dependency has to be in the project; SSE transport also needs Ktor.

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/kotlin-mcp-server.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/kotlin-mcp-server.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move applyTo from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/kotlin-mcp-server.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply. Move applyTo from the source into globs, or the rule will not attach on its own

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/kotlin-mcp-server.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/kotlin-mcp-server.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/instructions/kotlin-mcp-server.instructions.md

## When to use it
- set up an MCP server in Kotlin with typed request handling
- register tools with JSON schemas through server.addTool()
- wire up stdio or SSE transport with Ktor
- catch validation errors and flag them with isError
- run parallel searches inside a tool with coroutines

## Example prompts
- Scaffold a Kotlin MCP server with a search tool that takes a query and a limit
- Show me how to add SSE transport through Ktor for my server
- Add a resource that reads a file and handles a missing path

# Kotlin MCP Server Development Guidelines

When building MCP servers in Kotlin, follow these best practices and patterns using the official Kotlin SDK.

## Server Setup

Create an MCP server using the `Server` class:

```kotlin
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.server.Server
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.server.ServerOptions
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.Implementation
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.ServerCapabilities
val server = Server(
    serverInfo = Implementation(
        name = "my-server",
        version = "1.0.0"
    ),
    options = ServerOptions(
        capabilities = ServerCapabilities(
            tools = ServerCapabilities.Tools(),
            resources = ServerCapabilities.Resources(
                subscribe = true,
                listChanged = true
            ),
            prompts = ServerCapabilities.Prompts(listChanged = true)
        )
    )
) {
    "Server description goes here"
}
```

## Adding Tools

Use `server.addTool()` to register tools with typed request/response handling:

```kotlin
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.CallToolRequest
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.CallToolResult
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.TextContent
server.addTool(
    name = "search",
    description = "Search for information",
    inputSchema = buildJsonObject {
        put("type", "object")
        putJsonObject("properties") {
            putJsonObject("query") {
                put("type", "string")
                put("description", "The search query")
            }
            putJsonObject("limit") {
                put("type", "integer")
                put("description", "Maximum results to return")
            }
        }
        putJsonArray("required") {
            add("query")
        }
    }
) { request: CallToolRequest ->
    val query = request.params.arguments["query"] as? String
        ?: throw IllegalArgumentException("query is required")
    val limit = (request.params.arguments["limit"] as? Number)?.toInt() ?: 10
    // Perform search
    val results = performSearch(query, limit)
    CallToolResult(
        content = listOf(
            TextContent(
                text = results.joinToString("\n")
            )
        )
    )
}
```

## Adding Resources

Use `server.addResource()` to provide accessible data:

```kotlin
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.ReadResourceRequest
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.ReadResourceResult
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.TextResourceContents
server.addResource(
    uri = "file:///data/example.txt",
    name = "Example Data",
    description = "Example resource data",
    mimeType = "text/plain"
) { request: ReadResourceRequest ->
    val content = loadResourceContent(request.uri)
    ReadResourceResult(
        contents = listOf(
            TextResourceContents(
                text = content,
                uri = request.uri,
                mimeType = "text/plain"
            )
        )
    )
}
```

## Adding Prompts

Use `server.addPrompt()` for reusable prompt templates:

```kotlin
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.GetPromptRequest
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.GetPromptResult
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.PromptMessage
import io.modelcontextprotocol.kotlin.sdk.Role
````
