## What it does

The rule guides projects using Font Awesome 7 in web interfaces. It places the Kit script in the page `head`, uses the `i` element with an explicit style prefix, and relies on built-in sizing classes such as `fa-lg` and `fa-5x`. Custom icons belong in the Kit and use the `fa-kit` prefix.

Kit configuration also affects page weight. The rule recommends enabling only the icon styles and categories a project actually uses. Self-hosting is reserved for cases with specific performance requirements, caching plans, and control over asset delivery; Kit-based CDN integration is the recommended route for most projects.

Custom SVG files need a valid `viewBox`, explicit `width` and `height`, and a path structure suited to the icon type. Incorrect markup can cause upload or rendering failures. When icons appear as blank spaces or squares, check whether the Kit script loads correctly and inspect browser console errors. Misspelled icon classes are another common cause of missing symbols.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/fontawesome.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/fontawesome.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/fontawesome.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/fontawesome.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/fontawesome.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sanjeed5/awesome-cursor-rules-mdc/tree/HEAD/rules-mdc/fontawesome.mdc

## When to use it
- Place the Font Awesome Kit script in the page head
- Assign an explicit style to each icon
- Size interface icons with Font Awesome utility classes
- Limit Kit downloads to the icon sets in use
- Validate custom SVG markup and troubleshoot missing icons

## Example prompts
- Review the Font Awesome 7 setup and move the Kit script into the page `head` if needed.
- Fix the icon classes in this interface and apply explicit Font Awesome styles and sizing classes.
- Check the custom SVG files for Kit uploads, including their `viewBox`, dimensions, and `path` structure.

# fontawesome Best Practices

Font Awesome 7 is the definitive source for scalable UI icons in our web applications. Leveraging its power correctly ensures visual consistency, accessibility, and optimal performance. This guide outlines our team's mandatory best practices for Font Awesome integration.

## 1. Code Organization and Structure

Always use a Font Awesome Kit for integration. It's the most robust and feature-rich method, providing auto-accessibility and simplified management.

### 1.1 Kit-Based Setup

**Always embed your Font Awesome Kit script in the `<head>` of every page.** This ensures icons load early, prevents FOUT (Flash of Unstyled Text/Icons), and enables critical auto-accessibility features.

❌ **BAD: Script in `<body>` or via local files (unless explicitly self-hosting)**
```html
<body>
  <!-- ... other content ... -->
  <script src="https://kit.fontawesome.com/[YOUR_KIT_CODE].js" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
</body>
```

✅ **GOOD: Script in `<head>`**
```html
<head>
  <meta charset="UTF-8">
  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
  <title>My Awesome App</title>
  <!-- Font Awesome Kit must be here -->
  <script src="https://kit.fontawesome.com/[YOUR_KIT_CODE].js" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
  <!-- ... other head elements ... -->
</head>
```

### 1.2 Icon Markup

Use the `<i>` tag with appropriate Font Awesome classes. This is the simplest and most widely supported method.

❌ **BAD: Using `<span>` or other elements without a strong reason**
```html
<span class="fa-solid fa-user"></span>
```

✅ **GOOD: Using `<i>` for standard icons**
```html
<i class="fa-solid fa-user"></i>
```

### 1.3 Custom Icons

For icons not available in Font Awesome, upload them to your Kit. Treat them exactly like native icons for consistency.

❌ **BAD: Manually embedding custom SVGs or using separate icon libraries**
```html
<img src="/assets/custom-icon.svg" alt="Custom Icon">
```

✅ **GOOD: Uploading custom SVGs to your Kit and using `fa-kit` prefix**
```html
<!-- In your Kit, you've uploaded 'my-custom-icon.svg' -->
<i class="fa-kit fa-my-custom-icon"></i>
<!-- For duotone custom icons -->
<i class="fa-kit-duotone fa-my-duotone-icon"></i>
```

## 2. Common Patterns and Anti-patterns

### 2.1 Icon Styles

Always specify the icon style (e.g., `fa-solid`, `fa-regular`, `fa-brands`). Consistency in style is crucial for a unified UI.

❌ **BAD: Omitting style, relying on default (which can change or be ambiguous)**
```html
<i class="fa-user"></i> <!-- Which style? -->
```

✅ **GOOD: Explicitly defining the style**
```html
<i class="fa-solid fa-user"></i>
<i class="fa-regular fa-star"></i>
<i class="fa-brands fa-github"></i>
<i class="fa-sharp fa-solid fa-gear"></i>
```

### 2.2 Sizing Icons

Utilize Font Awesome's sizing utilities to maintain consistent vertical alignment and scale. Avoid custom CSS `font-size` overrides unless absolutely necessary for unique cases.

#### 2.2.1 Relative Sizing (for UI elements)

Use `fa-xs` to `fa-2xl` when icons need to align with text or other UI components. These classes adjust size while preserving vertical alignment.

❌ **BAD: Custom CSS `font-size` for inline icons**
```html
<p><i class="fa-solid fa-coffee" style="font-size: 1.2em;"></i> My coffee</p>
```
