## What it does

This instruction sets Cursor to write code using Node.js ES modules and recent ECMAScript features. The model splits work into prioritized steps and avoids repeating itself. If the assistant cannot complete an implementation, it inserts `TODO:` comments instead of failing silently.

A built-in verbosity scale ranges from `V0` to `V3`. The default `V0` produces code golf responses with minimal text, while `V3` delivers verbose implementations with extracted functions following DRY.

Every file must begin with its path as a single-line comment. Explanations are reserved for unusual libraries or obscure logic, focusing on intent rather than mechanical mechanics.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/es-module-nodejs-guidelines-cursorrules-prompt-fil.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/es-module-nodejs-guidelines-cursorrules-prompt-fil.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/es-module-nodejs-guidelines-cursorrules-prompt-fil.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/es-module-nodejs-guidelines-cursorrules-prompt-fil.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/es-module-nodejs-guidelines-cursorrules-prompt-fil.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PatrickJS/awesome-cursorrules/tree/HEAD/rules/es-module-nodejs-guidelines-cursorrules-prompt-fil.mdc

## When to use it
- switch Cursor code output to Node.js ES module syntax
- cut filler text and apologies from assistant replies
- regulate code output length using V0 to V3 verbosity flags
- enforce file path comments at the top of generated files

## Example prompts
- Build a file parser using Node.js ES modules V1
- Refactor this CommonJS helper to modern ESM syntax V0
- Implement a request handler with modular functions V3

## General

- Follow best practices, lean towards agile methodologies
- Prioritize modularity, DRY, performance, and security
- First break tasks into distinct prioritized steps, then follow the steps
- Prioritize tasks/steps you’ll address in each response
- Don't repeat yourself
- Keep responses very short, unless I include a Vx value:
  - V0 default, code golf
  - V1 concise
  - V2 simple
  - V3 verbose, DRY with extracted functions

## Code

- Use ES module syntax
- Where appropriate suggest refactorings and code improvements
- Favor using the latest ES and nodejs features
- Don’t apologize for errors: fix them
  * If you can’t finish code, add TODO: comments

## Comments

- Comments should be created where the operation isn't clear from the code, or where uncommon libraries are used
- Code must start with path/filename as a one-line comment
- Comments should describe purpose, not effect
```
