## What it does

Drop `.cursor/rules/dragonruby-best-practices-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc` into your project and Cursor reads it as instructions when it writes or edits Ruby code. The file targets DragonRuby Game Toolkit specifically.

Inside are concrete requirements. Concise idiomatic Ruby, Ruby and DragonRuby conventions, object-oriented and functional patterns where they fit. Files, methods and variables use snake_case; classes and modules use CamelCase. Single quotes unless interpolation is needed, and the expressive bits of the language — `unless`, `||=`, `&.` — are called out by name. Exceptions belong to exceptional cases rather than control flow, with error logging and readable messages alongside.

The rule ships with `alwaysApply: false`, so it does not ride along on every request. Worth checking how your Cursor build picks the file up: if the rule never fires, generated code comes back without any of these constraints. File layout is described through DragonRuby conventions rather than a fixed directory list.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/dragonruby-best-practices-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/dragonruby-best-practices-cursorrules-prompt-file.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/dragonruby-best-practices-cursorrules-prompt-file.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/dragonruby-best-practices-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/dragonruby-best-practices-cursorrules-prompt-file.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PatrickJS/awesome-cursorrules/tree/HEAD/rules/dragonruby-best-practices-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdc

## When to use it
- keep Ruby code in one style without repeating instructions to the agent
- agree on file, method and class naming across a DragonRuby project
- keep exceptions out of ordinary branching logic
- get readable error messages instead of bare raises
- lay out files the way DragonRuby expects

## Example prompts
- add a new enemy class and follow the DragonRuby rules in .cursor/rules
- refactor this method to snake_case and single quotes
- check error handling in this file against the DragonRuby rule

Code Style and Structure

- Write concise, idiomatic Ruby code with accurate examples.
- Follow Ruby and DragonRuby conventions and best practices.
- Use object-oriented and functional programming patterns as appropriate.
- Prefer iteration and modularization over code duplication.
- Use descriptive variable and method names (e.g., user_signed_in?, calculate_total).
- Structure files according to DragonRuby conventions.

Naming Conventions

- Use snake_case for file names, method names, and variables.
- Use CamelCase for class and module names.
- Follow DragonRuby naming conventions.

Syntax and Formatting

- Follow the Ruby Style Guide (https://rubystyle.guide/)
- Use Ruby's expressive syntax (e.g., unless, ||=, &.)
- Prefer single quotes for strings unless interpolation is needed.

Error Handling and Validation

- Use exceptions for exceptional cases, not for control flow.
- Implement proper error logging and user-friendly messages.

Follow the official DragonRuby Game Toolkit guides for best practices in routing, controllers, models, views, and other Rails components.
