## What it does

The rule applies across project files and steers Copilot toward Debian Stable conventions. It asks for the release name when relevant, favors official Debian repositories, and separates interactive package commands (`apt`) from script commands (`apt-get`). Package inspection uses tools such as `apt-cache policy`, `apt show`, and `dpkg -l`.

For system configuration, it points to `/etc` and systemd drop-in files, with `systemctl` for service control and `journalctl` for logs. Security guidance covers AppArmor, limited `sudo` privileges, and verification after changes. Commands should be ready to copy, and destructive actions should include rollback steps. Firewall advice must identify whether it expects `ufw` or `nftables`.

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/debian-linux.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/debian-linux.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move applyTo from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/debian-linux.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply. Move applyTo from the source into globs, or the rule will not attach on its own

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/debian-linux.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/debian-linux.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/instructions/debian-linux.instructions.md

## When to use it
- choose `apt` commands for interactive package management
- write Debian install scripts with `apt-get`
- override a systemd service through a drop-in file
- add verification and rollback steps for system changes

## Example prompts
- Prepare package update commands for Debian Stable and show how to verify the result.
- Write a Debian package installation script using `apt-get`.
- Suggest a safe systemd drop-in override and include checks plus rollback steps.

# Debian Linux Administration Guidelines

Use these instructions when writing guidance, scripts, or documentation intended for Debian-based systems.

## Platform Alignment

- Favor Debian Stable defaults and long-term support expectations.
- Call out the Debian release (`bookworm`, `bullseye`, etc.) when relevant.
- Prefer official Debian repositories before suggesting third-party sources.

## Package Management

- Use `apt` for interactive commands and `apt-get` for scripts.
- Inspect packages with `apt-cache policy`, `apt show`, and `dpkg -l`.
- Use `apt-mark` to track manual vs. auto-installed packages.
- Document any apt pinning in `/etc/apt/preferences.d/` and explain why.

## Configuration & Services

- Store configuration under `/etc` and avoid modifying `/usr` files directly.
- Use systemd drop-ins in `/etc/systemd/system/<unit>.d/` for overrides.
- Prefer `systemctl` and `journalctl` for service control and logs.
- Use `ufw` or `nftables` for firewall guidance; state which is expected.

## Security

- Account for AppArmor profiles and mention adjustments if needed.
- Recommend least-privilege `sudo` use and minimal package installs.
- Include verification commands after security changes.

## Deliverables

- Provide commands in copy-paste-ready blocks.
- Include validation steps after changes.
- Offer rollback steps for destructive actions.
