## What it does

The rule standardizes stylesheet authoring around Sass and a simplified ITCSS directory layout. Styles split across `base`, `components`, `layout`, and `utilities` folders. Selectors must follow BEM naming conventions to prevent specificity conflicts. It also replaces hardcoded measurements and colors with CSS custom properties declared in `_variables.scss`.

Layouts rely on a mobile-first flow. Page scaffolds use CSS Grid, while single-axis alignments use Flexbox. Sizing avoids fixed pixels in favor of `rem`, `em`, and container queries. Web fonts require `font-display: swap` to prevent blank text states during asset loading.

Hardware-accelerated rendering is strictly enforced. The rule restricts transitions to `transform` and `opacity`, explicitly banning animations on dimensions and margins.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/css.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/css.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/css.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/css.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/css.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sanjeed5/awesome-cursor-rules-mdc/tree/HEAD/rules-mdc/css.mdc

## When to use it
- eliminate selector specificity conflicts with BEM conventions
- organize Sass files into modular ITCSS layers
- construct mobile-first layouts using CSS Grid and Flexbox
- prevent layout reflows by animating only `transform` and `opacity`

## Example prompts
- Create a responsive card component following BEM naming and Sass structure
- Refactor color and spacing values into CSS custom properties
- Build a two-dimensional dashboard grid with mobile-first media queries

# CSS Best Practices

This guide outlines the definitive best practices for writing CSS within our team. Adhering to these principles ensures our stylesheets are scalable, maintainable, performant, and accessible.

## 1. Code Organization & Structure

Adopt a modular, predictable structure. Use Sass for pre-processing.

### 1.1 File Structure (Modular & Scalable)

Organize CSS into logical, focused files. A simplified ITCSS-like structure is recommended.

```css
/*
  css/
  ├── base/             // Project-wide defaults (reset, typography, variables)
  │   ├── _reset.scss
  │   ├── _typography.scss
  │   └── _variables.scss // Design tokens
  ├── components/       // Self-contained UI components (buttons, cards)
  │   ├── _button.scss
  │   └── _card.scss
  ├── layout/           // Major page sections (header, footer, grid)
  │   ├── _grid.scss
  │   └── _header.scss
  └── utilities/        // Single-purpose helper classes (spacing, text alignment)
      ├── _spacing.scss
      └── _helpers.scss
*/
// main.scss
@import 'base/reset';
@import 'base/variables';
@import 'base/typography';
@import 'layout/grid';
@import 'layout/header';
@import 'components/button';
@import 'components/card';
@import 'utilities/spacing';
@import 'utilities/helpers';
```

### 1.2 Naming Convention (BEM)

Use BEM (Block-Element-Modifier) for clear, flat, and highly readable selectors. This prevents specificity wars and improves reusability.

❌ BAD: Deeply nested, ambiguous selectors
```css
.header .nav ul li a { /* ... */ }
.card.featured { /* ... */ }
```

✅ GOOD: BEM for clarity and reusability
```css
/* Block */
.card { /* ... */ }
/* Element */
.card__title { /* ... */ }
.card__image { /* ... */ }
/* Modifier */
.card--featured { /* ... */ }
.card__title--large { /* ... */ }
```

### 1.3 CSS Custom Properties (Design Tokens)

Centralize design values (colors, fonts, spacing) using CSS variables. This enables consistency, easy theming, and dynamic updates.

```css
/* _variables.scss */
:root {
  --color-primary: #007bff;
  --color-text: #333;
  --font-family-sans: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto;
  --spacing-md: 1rem;
}
/* Usage */
.button {
  background-color: var(--color-primary);
  color: white;
  padding: var(--spacing-md);
  font-family: var(--font-family-sans);
}
```

### 1.4 Minimal Nesting (Sass)

Avoid excessive nesting in Sass; it leads to overly specific and hard-to-override CSS. Nest only when necessary for context or specificity (e.g., pseudo-states).

❌ BAD: Over-nested selectors
```scss
.nav {
  ul {
    li {
      a {
        color: var(--color-text);
        &:hover {
          color: var(--color-primary);
        }
      }
    }
  }
}
```

✅ GOOD: Flat structure, nest only for direct context
```scss
.nav {
  &__list { /* ... */ }
  &__item { /* ... */ }
  &__link {
    color: var(--color-text);
    &:hover {
      color: var(--color-primary);
    }
  }
}
```

## 2. Layout & Responsive Design

Prioritize mobile-first design using modern layout tools and relative units.

### 2.1 Mobile-First Approach

Design for small screens first, then progressively enhance for larger viewports using media queries.

```css
/* Mobile styles first */
.container {
  padding: 1rem;
}
/* Larger screens (e.g., tablet and up) */
@media (min-width: 768px) {
  .container {
    padding: 2rem;
  }
}
```

### 2.2 CSS Grid for 2D Layouts, Flexbox for 1D Layouts

Use the right tool for the job.

✅ GOOD: Flexbox for aligning items in a single dimension (row or column)
```css
.button-group {
  display: flex;
  gap: 1rem;
  justify-content: center; /* Horizontally center items */
  align-items: center;     /* Vertically center items */
}
```
