# convert-jpa-to-spring-data-cosmos

A step-by-step Copilot rule for moving a Spring Boot app off JPA and onto Azure Cosmos DB with Spring Data Cosmos. Useful once the migration is already decided.

## What it does

The rule lays out a JPA to Azure Cosmos DB migration for Spring Boot. It runs through nine steps: swap build dependencies, add a `cosmos` profile and properties, write a config class with Azure Identity authentication, reshape entities and repositories, add a service layer for relationships, update every test, and seed data with a `CommandLineRunner`.

Entities change a lot. The `id` field goes from `Integer` to `String`, `@Entity` becomes `@Container`, a `@PartitionKey` field appears, and `@OneToMany` or `@ManyToOne` relationships turn into embedded collections or reference IDs. There is a dedicated section on authentication entities: `@JsonIgnore` on the password or authorities breaks serialization to Cosmos, so the guide points you at `@JsonProperty` and storing authorities as `Set<String>`. For Thymeleaf or JSP apps it suggests keeping a transient `@JsonIgnore` property next to the stored ID list, so template access still works.

A guard sits at the top: apply the guide only when the user explicitly asks for an Azure Cosmos DB migration. Finding JPA in a project is not enough. Setup needs the `com.azure:azure-identity` dependency and `DefaultAzureCredential`; key-based auth is not the path shown here. Because IDs become strings, expect to rewrite tests and any code that assumed a numeric identifier.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/convert-jpa-to-spring-data-cosmos.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/convert-jpa-to-spring-data-cosmos.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move applyTo from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/convert-jpa-to-spring-data-cosmos.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply. Move applyTo from the source into globs, or the rule will not attach on its own

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/convert-jpa-to-spring-data-cosmos.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/convert-jpa-to-spring-data-cosmos.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/instructions/convert-jpa-to-spring-data-cosmos.instructions.md

## When to use it
- swap JPA dependencies for Azure Cosmos DB in Maven or Gradle
- convert entities to `@Container` and `@PartitionKey`
- fix serialization of authentication entities for Cosmos
- keep relationship access working in Thymeleaf templates after switching to IDs
- rewrite tests around string identifiers

## Example prompts
- Apply the convert-jpa-to-spring-data-cosmos rule and migrate this project to Azure Cosmos DB
- Replace `JpaRepository` with `CosmosRepository` in this module's repositories
- Check the User entity and drop `@JsonIgnore` from fields that must persist to Cosmos

# Convert Spring JPA project to Spring Data Cosmos

> **Guard:** Apply this guide ONLY when the user explicitly asks to migrate to Azure Cosmos DB. Detecting JPA in a project does not authorize a migration. Otherwise, follow the `java-hibernate-jpa` and Spring Boot guidance.

This generalized guide applies to any JPA to Spring Data Cosmos DB conversion project.

## High-level plan

1. Swap build dependencies (remove JPA, add Cosmos + Identity).
2. Add `cosmos` profile and properties.
3. Add Cosmos config with proper Azure identity authentication.
4. Transform entities (ids → `String`, add `@Container` and `@PartitionKey`, remove JPA mappings, adjust relationships).
5. Convert repositories (`JpaRepository` → `CosmosRepository`).
6. **Create service layer** for relationship management and template compatibility.
7. **CRITICAL**: Update ALL test files to work with String IDs and Cosmos repositories.
8. Seed data via `CommandLineRunner`.
9. **CRITICAL**: Test runtime functionality and fix template compatibility issues.

## Step-by-step

### Step 1 — Build dependencies

- **Maven** (`pom.xml`):
  - Remove dependency `spring-boot-starter-data-jpa`
  - Remove database-specific dependencies (H2, MySQL, PostgreSQL) unless needed elsewhere
  - Add `com.azure:azure-spring-data-cosmos:5.17.0` (or latest compatible version)
  - Add `com.azure:azure-identity:1.15.4` (required for DefaultAzureCredential)
- **Gradle**: Apply same dependency changes for Gradle syntax
- Remove testcontainers and JPA-specific test dependencies

### Step 2 — Properties and Configuration

- Create `src/main/resources/application-cosmos.properties`:
  ```properties
  azure.cosmos.uri=${COSMOS_URI:https://localhost:8081}
  azure.cosmos.database=${COSMOS_DATABASE:petclinic}
  azure.cosmos.populate-query-metrics=false
  azure.cosmos.enable-multiple-write-locations=false
  ```
- Update `src/main/resources/application.properties`:
  ```properties
  spring.profiles.active=cosmos
  ```

### Step 3 — Configuration class with Azure Identity

- Create `src/main/java/<rootpkg>/config/CosmosConfiguration.java`:
  ```java
  @Configuration
  @EnableCosmosRepositories(basePackages = "<rootpkg>")
  public class CosmosConfiguration extends AbstractCosmosConfiguration {
    @Value("${azure.cosmos.uri}")
    private String uri;
    @Value("${azure.cosmos.database}")
    private String dbName;
    @Bean
    public CosmosClientBuilder getCosmosClientBuilder() {
      return new CosmosClientBuilder().endpoint(uri).credential(new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder().build());
    }
    @Override
    protected String getDatabaseName() {
      return dbName;
    }
    @Bean
    public CosmosConfig cosmosConfig() {
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 31695104603f3b3f tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
