# azure-verified-modules-bicep

Instructs GitHub Copilot to use Azure Verified Modules when writing Bicep templates. It enforces AVM registry modules over raw Azure resource declarations.

## What it does

This rule targets `**/*.bicep` and `**/*.bicepparam` files. It directs Copilot to fetch modules from the Bicep Public Registry using the `br/public:avm/res/{service}/{resource}:{version}` path. If an AVM module does not exist for a given resource, Copilot falls back to native Bicep resource declarations with the latest stable API version.

The instructions enforce clear naming conventions. All parameters and variables must use lowerCamelCase without the redundant name suffix. Dependencies must be defined using symbolic names rather than explicit `dependsOn` properties or legacy helper functions. This prevents messy code.

Validation is mandatory after editing templates. The assistant must run `az bicep build --file main.bicep` and update corresponding `.bicepparam` files whenever parameter signatures change. Outputting raw keys or secrets is strictly forbidden. Without the Azure CLI and the Bicep component installed, you cannot verify the generated code.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/azure-verified-modules-bicep.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/azure-verified-modules-bicep.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move applyTo from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/azure-verified-modules-bicep.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply. Move applyTo from the source into globs, or the rule will not attach on its own

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/azure-verified-modules-bicep.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/azure-verified-modules-bicep.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/instructions/azure-verified-modules-bicep.instructions.md

## When to use it
- Deploy resources using official Azure Verified Modules from the public registry
- Structure symbolic dependencies in Bicep templates without `dependsOn`
- Keep `.bicepparam` files in sync with updated parameter signatures
- Prevent secrets from leaking into template output blocks

## Example prompts
- Add a storage account module from AVM to `main.bicep` with pinned versioning
- Refactor this network template to use symbolic references instead of `dependsOn`
- Update `main.bicepparam` to reflect the new parameters added to `main.bicep`

# Azure Verified Modules (AVM) Bicep

## Overview

Azure Verified Modules (AVM) are pre-built, tested, and validated Bicep modules that follow Azure best practices. Use these modules to create, update, or review Azure Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with confidence.

## Module Discovery

### Bicep Public Registry

- Search for modules: `br/public:avm/res/{service}/{resource}:{version}`
- Browse available modules: `https://github.com/Azure/bicep-registry-modules/tree/main/avm/res`
- Example: `br/public:avm/res/storage/storage-account:0.30.0`

### Official AVM Index

- **Bicep Resource Modules**: `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Azure/Azure-Verified-Modules/refs/heads/main/docs/static/module-indexes/BicepResourceModules.csv`
- **Bicep Pattern Modules**: `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Azure/Azure-Verified-Modules/refs/heads/main/docs/static/module-indexes/BicepPatternModules.csv`

### Module Documentation

- **GitHub Repository**: `https://github.com/Azure/bicep-registry-modules/tree/main/avm/res/{service}/{resource}`
- **README**: Each module contains comprehensive documentation with examples

## Module Usage

### From Examples

1. Review module README in `https://github.com/Azure/bicep-registry-modules/tree/main/avm/res/{service}/{resource}`
2. Copy example code from module documentation
3. Reference module using `br/public:avm/res/{service}/{resource}:{version}`
4. Configure required and optional parameters

### Example Usage

```bicep
module storageAccount 'br/public:avm/res/storage/storage-account:0.30.0' = {
  name: 'storage-account-deployment'
  scope: resourceGroup()
  params: {
    name: storageAccountName
    location: location
    skuName: 'Standard_LRS'
    tags: tags
  }
}
```

### When AVM Module Not Available

If no AVM module exists for a resource type, use native Bicep resource declarations with latest stable API version.

## Naming Conventions

### Module References

- **Resource Modules**: `br/public:avm/res/{service}/{resource}:{version}`
- **Pattern Modules**: `br/public:avm/ptn/{pattern}:{version}`
- Example: `br/public:avm/res/network/virtual-network:0.7.2`

### Symbolic Names

- Use lowerCamelCase for all names (variables, parameters, resources, modules)
- Use resource type descriptive names (e.g., `storageAccount` not `storageAccountName`)
- Avoid 'name' suffix in symbolic names as they represent the resource, not the resource's name
- Avoid distinguishing variables and parameters by suffixes

## Version Management

### Version Pinning Best Practices

- Always pin to specific module versions: `:{version}`
- Use semantic versioning (e.g., `:0.30.0`)
- Review module changelog before upgrading
- Test version upgrades in non-production environments first

## Development Best Practices

### Module Discovery and Usage

- ✅ **Always** check for existing AVM modules before creating raw resources
- ✅ **Review** module documentation and examples before implementation
- ✅ **Pin** module versions explicitly
- ✅ **Use** types from modules when available (import types from module)
- ✅ **Prefer** AVM modules over raw resource declarations

### Code Structure

- ✅ **Declare** parameters at top of file with `@sys.description()` decorators
