# ant-design

A Cursor rule that tells the agent how to build UI with Ant Design v6.x: tokens for theming, the grid for layout, accessible components. Useful on React projects already using antd.

## What it does

The rule spells out how to write Ant Design v6.x interfaces so the codebase stays consistent. Theming goes through design tokens in `ConfigProvider`, not through CSS overrides. You keep a `theme.ts` file, adjust `seedToken` for global values and `componentToken` for individual components, and switch light and dark mode with the preset algorithms.

Layout follows the 8-pixel grid and a 1440px canvas. Structure comes from `Row` and `Col` with `span` and `gutter` props rather than hand-written pixel margins. Components are imported straight from `antd`, and interactive elements need `aria-*` attributes — an icon-only button without one leaves screen reader users with nothing to go on. Locale and theme are set at the app root through `ConfigProvider`; for SSR the rule points to the official Ant Design guide to avoid hydration mismatches.

One section covers performance: production builds enable `zeroRuntime` mode (added in v6.0.0) and import pre-generated CSS, while the bundler handles tree shaking for `antd`. The rule assumes TypeScript and ESLint with `eslint-plugin-antd`. On a project without React or Ant Design it will push the agent to pull in components that do not belong there — worth checking before you drop it in.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/ant-design.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/ant-design.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/ant-design.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/ant-design.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/ant-design.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sanjeed5/awesome-cursor-rules-mdc/tree/HEAD/rules-mdc/ant-design.mdc

## When to use it
- move app theming onto design tokens instead of CSS patches
- build a responsive layout with Row and Col and no manual margins
- add aria attributes to icon-only buttons
- wire up locale and theme at the app root
- turn on zeroRuntime and trim CSS from the bundle

## Example prompts
- Rewrite the app theme using Ant Design design tokens and put the config in `theme.ts`
- Build this screen with Row and Col, gutter 16, no custom margins
- Audit these components for accessibility and add the missing aria attributes

# ant-design Best Practices

This guide outlines the definitive best practices for using Ant Design v6.x in our projects. Adhering to these standards ensures consistency, accessibility, and maintainability across our codebase.

## 1. Theming: Design Token Driven

Always customize Ant Design's appearance using its design token system via `ConfigProvider`. Avoid direct CSS overrides for visual properties that can be controlled by tokens.

### ✅ GOOD: Centralized Token Customization

Create a `theme.ts` file to export your theme configuration and apply it at the root of your application. Prefer `seedToken` adjustments for global changes and `componentToken` for specific component overrides. Utilize preset algorithms for light/dark mode.

```typescript
// src/theme.ts
import { theme } from 'antd';
import type { ThemeConfig } from 'antd';
export const appTheme: ThemeConfig = {
  algorithm: theme.defaultAlgorithm, // Or theme.darkAlgorithm, [theme.defaultAlgorithm, theme.darkAlgorithm]
  token: {
    colorPrimary: '#0050B3', // Our primary brand color
    colorSuccess: '#52C41A',
    fontSize: 14,
    borderRadius: 4,
    // Disable motion globally for accessibility/performance
    motion: false,
  },
  components: {
    Button: {
      colorPrimary: '#1890FF', // Override primary button color
      algorithm: true, // Enable algorithm for component token derivation
    },
    Layout: {
      headerBg: '#001529',
      footerBg: '#F0F2F5',
    },
  },
};
```

```tsx
// src/App.tsx (or root layout)
import React from 'react';
import { ConfigProvider, App as AntdApp } from 'antd';
import { appTheme } from './theme';
import HomePage from './pages/HomePage';
const App: React.FC = () => {
  return (
    <ConfigProvider theme={appTheme}>
      {/* Use AntdApp for context-aware static methods (message, Modal, notification) */}
      <AntdApp>
        <HomePage />
      </AntdApp>
    </ConfigProvider>
  );
};
export default App;
```

### ❌ BAD: Direct CSS Overrides

Avoid overriding Ant Design component styles with custom CSS classes or inline styles for properties that are themeable. This leads to inconsistent UIs and breaks theme updates.

```css
/* ❌ BAD: Avoid this for themeable properties */
.ant-btn-primary {
  background-color: #f00 !important; /* Breaks theme */
  border-color: #f00 !important;
}
```

## 2. Layout: Unified Grid System

Adhere to Ant Design's 8-pixel grid unit and the unified 1440px canvas width. Use `Row` and `Col` components for structural layout, leveraging their `span` and `gutter` props.

### ✅ GOOD: Responsive Layout with Grid

```tsx
import React from 'react';
import { Layout, Row, Col } from 'antd';
const { Header, Content, Footer } = Layout;
const MyLayout: React.FC = () => (
  <Layout style={{ minHeight: '100vh' }}>
    <Header style={{ backgroundColor: '#001529' }}>
      {/* Header content */}
    </Header>
    <Content style={{ padding: '0 50px', maxWidth: 1440, margin: '16px auto' }}>
      <Row gutter={[16, 16]}> {/* 16px horizontal and vertical gutter */}
        <Col span={24}>
          <h1>Welcome to our Application</h1>
        </Col>
        <Col xs={24} sm={12} md={8}> {/* Responsive columns */}
