# android-sdk

A Cursor rule that sets Android Java standards: MVVM, Jetpack libraries, Hilt, Room and navigation. Useful when the agent edits Java code in an Android project.

## What it does

The rule ships as `.mdc` with the glob `**/*.java`, so Cursor applies it to Java files in an Android project. Inside is a set of practices: modular MVVM architecture and packages organised by feature rather than by component type. Each topic comes with a bad and a good code sample.

For Jetpack the rule pushes Room for local storage, View Binding instead of `findViewById`, and Navigation Component instead of manual fragment transactions. Dependency injection goes through Hilt on top of Dagger. The samples cut off inside the `AppModule` example, so treat the DI and testing sections as a starting point rather than a full reference.

Everything here targets Java. On a Kotlin codebase the `AndroidViewModel` and threading examples won't match your code, so look for a Kotlin rule instead.

## Install

### Cursor (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/rules/android-sdk.mdc` — Frontmatter: description, globs, alwaysApply

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/rules/android-sdk.md` — The paths frontmatter field limits the files: move globs from the source into paths

### Codex

**AGENTS.md**
- Codex reads AGENTS.md: paste the rule text there

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/instructions/android-sdk.instructions.md` — The applyTo field sets which files it applies to: move globs from the source into applyTo

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/rules/android-sdk.md`

### Cline

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.clinerules/android-sdk.md`

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sanjeed5/awesome-cursor-rules-mdc/tree/HEAD/rules-mdc/android-sdk.mdc

## When to use it
- stop the agent from making network calls in an Activity
- group packages by feature instead of by Android component
- move local storage from raw SQLiteOpenHelper to Room
- drop findViewById boilerplate with View Binding
- replace manual fragment transactions with a navigation graph

## Example prompts
- Refactor UserProfileActivity to MVVM with a ViewModel and repository
- Rewrite this screen with View Binding instead of findViewById
- Switch the fragment transactions to Navigation Component

# android-sdk Best Practices (Java)

This guide outlines the essential practices for building robust, performant, and maintainable Android applications using Java, adhering to modern standards and leveraging the AndroidX ecosystem.

## 1. Code Organization and Structure

**1.1 Modular Architecture (MVVM)**
Adopt a clean, modular architecture, with MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) as the standard. This promotes separation of concerns, testability, and scalability.

❌ **BAD: Tight Coupling**
```java
// Activity directly fetching data and updating UI
public class UserProfileActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
    private TextView userName;
    // ... other UI elements
    @Override
    protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_user_profile);
        userName = findViewById(R.id.user_name);
        // Direct network call on UI thread (or poorly managed background thread)
        new Thread(() -> {
            String name = fetchUserNameFromNetwork(); // Blocking call
            runOnUiThread(() -> userName.setText(name));
        }).start();
    }
    // ...
}
```

✅ **GOOD: MVVM with Repository Pattern**
```java
// ui/UserProfileActivity.java
public class UserProfileActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
    private UserProfileViewModel viewModel;
    private TextView userName;
    @Override
    protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_user_profile);
        userName = findViewById(R.id.user_name);
        viewModel = new ViewModelProvider(this).get(UserProfileViewModel.class);
        viewModel.getUserName().observe(this, name -> {
            userName.setText(name);
        });
    }
}
// ui/UserProfileViewModel.java
public class UserProfileViewModel extends AndroidViewModel {
    private UserRepository userRepository;
    private MutableLiveData<String> userName = new MutableLiveData<>();
    public UserProfileViewModel(@NonNull Application application) {
        super(application);
        this.userRepository = new UserRepository(application); // Injected via Hilt in real app
        loadUserName();
    }
    public LiveData<String> getUserName() {
        return userName;
    }
    private void loadUserName() {
        // Use ExecutorService or RxJava for background work
        Executors.newSingleThreadExecutor().execute(() -> {
            String name = userRepository.fetchUserName();
            userName.postValue(name); // Post value to main thread
        });
    }
}
// data/UserRepository.java
public class UserRepository {
    // In a real app, this would interact with Room, Retrofit, etc.
    public String fetchUserName() {
        // Simulate network call
        try { Thread.sleep(2000); } catch (InterruptedException e) {}
        return "John Doe";
    }
}
```

**1.2 Package Structure**
Organize packages by feature or layer, not by Android component type.

❌ **BAD: Component-based**
```
com.example.app
├── activities
│   └── UserProfileActivity.java
├── fragments
│   └── SettingsFragment.java
├── adapters
│   └── UserListAdapter.java
└── utils
    └── NetworkUtils.java
```

✅ **GOOD: Feature-based (or Layer-based for larger apps)**
```
com.example.app
├── userprofile
│   ├── UserProfileActivity.java
│   ├── UserProfileViewModel.java
│   └── UserProfileFragment.java
├── settings
│   ├── SettingsActivity.java
│   └── SettingsViewModel.java
