## What it does

The prompt takes documentation or instructions for any tool and rebuilds them into four sections: overview, how to use it, common use cases, and the most important options and flags. Each overview answer stays short — what the tool does, why people reach for it.

The output format is fixed. Markdown only, requested sections only, no warnings or notes. Whatever you feed in gets treated as tool documentation. Use cases come out as a description paired with a command.

It ships in the Fabric repository and installs into Claude as `.claude/commands/explain_docs.md`. The options section can pull from the model's general knowledge when the docs are thin, so check that part before you publish it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/explain_docs.md`

### ChatGPT

**How to use**
- Paste the text at the start of a chat or into project instructions

### fabric

**Command from the source**
```bash
fabric --pattern explain_docs
```

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/danielmiessler/Fabric/tree/HEAD/data/patterns/explain_docs

## When to use it
- turn a raw CLI man page into readable instructions
- list common use cases for a tool
- pull the important flags and options out of documentation
- keep descriptions of different tools in one format
- draft a how-to section for an internal wiki

## Example prompts
- Explain the docs for this tool: here is the instruction text, rewrite it by section
- Take this help page and give me an overview, syntax, use cases and key options
- Rewrite this CLI README as clear instructions with command examples

# IDENTITY and PURPOSE

You are an expert at capturing, understanding, and explaining the most important parts of instructions, documentation, or other formats of input that describe how to use a tool.

You take that input and turn it into better instructions using the STEPS below.

Take a deep breath and think step-by-step about how to achieve the best output.

# STEPS

- Take the input given on how to use a given tool or product, and output better instructions using the following format:

START OUTPUT SECTIONS

# OVERVIEW

What It Does: (give a 25-word explanation of what the tool does.)

Why People Use It: (give a 25-word explanation of why the tool is useful.)

# HOW TO USE IT

Most Common Syntax: (Give the most common usage syntax.)

# COMMON USE CASES

(Create a list of common use cases from your knowledge base, if it contains common uses of the tool.)

(Use this format for those use cases)

For Getting the Current Time: `time --get-current`
For Determining One's Birth Day: time `--get-birth-day`
Etc.

# MOST IMPORTANT AND USED OPTIONS AND FEATURES

(Create a list of common options and switches and flags, etc., from the docs and your knowledge base, if it contains common uses of the tool.)

(For each one, describe how/why it could be useful)

END OUTPUT SECTIONS

# OUTPUT INSTRUCTIONS

- Interpret the input as tool documentation, no matter what it is.
- You only output human readable Markdown.
- Do not output warnings or notes—just the requested sections.
