## What it does

SkillCheck Free runs roughly 25 checks over a SKILL.md file. They are grouped by area: structure (1.x), body (2.x), naming (3.x), semantics (4.x) and quality patterns (8.x). The plugin also sorts each skill into one of five design patterns from the Google ADK taxonomy: Reviewer, Generator, Inversion, Pipeline, Tool Wrapper.

In practice it flags missing or thin frontmatter, vague wording such as “several”, instructions that contradict each other, trigger collisions, names like “helper” or “utils”, XML angle brackets in frontmatter, and a README.md sitting inside the skill folder. Some checks target fields that do not belong: `maxTurns` is ignored in SKILL.md, `disallowedTools` should be written `disallowed-tools`, and a `description` plus `when_to_use` longer than 1,536 characters gets truncated in the skill listing.

Installation in Claude goes through the plugin marketplace. On Claude Desktop and the web the skill is pasted into a Project's custom instructions, and in Cursor the `.mdc` rule file is copied into `.cursor/rules`. If a skill uses `$ARGUMENTS` without an `argument-hint` in frontmatter, a check will say so.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-community
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install skillcheck-free@claude-community
```

## When to use it
- validate a SKILL.md before publishing a skill
- spot contradictions between instructions in one skill
- strip vague wording out of trigger descriptions
- catch frontmatter fields that claude.ai uploads reject
- classify a skill by its Google ADK design pattern

## Example prompts
- skillcheck my skill
- check skill at path/to/SKILL.md
- validate my skills

Validate AI coding assistant skills against the [agentskills specification](https://agentskills.io). Works with Claude Code, Claude Desktop/Web, and Cursor. Catch issues before your users do.

## Why SkillCheck?

Agent Skills are now an open standard adopted by Claude Code, Cursor, and dozens of coding agents. Your skill needs to work everywhere and follow best practices.

SkillCheck validates:
- Does the YAML frontmatter follow the spec?
- Will it trigger when users actually need it?
- Are the instructions clear and unambiguous?

## Installation

### Claude Code

The simplest path — use the [skills CLI](https://github.com/vercel-labs/skills):

```bash
npx skills add olgasafonova/SkillCheck-Free
```

Or copy the folder manually:

```bash
cp -r skills/skill-check ~/.claude/skills/
```

Or clone directly:

```bash
git clone https://github.com/olgasafonova/SkillCheck-Free.git
cp -r SkillCheck-Free/skills/skill-check ~/.claude/skills/
```

### Claude Desktop/Web (Projects)

1. Open [claude.ai](https://claude.ai) or Claude Desktop app
2. Create a new Project (or open an existing one)
3. Go to Project settings → Custom instructions
4. Copy the contents of [`skills/skill-check/SKILL.md`](skills/skill-check/SKILL.md) (everything after the `---` frontmatter)
5. Paste into the custom instructions field

No file installation needed - the skill runs directly from your Project instructions.

### Cursor

Copy the rule file to your project's `.cursor/rules` directory:

```bash
mkdir -p .cursor/rules
cp cursor-rules/skill-check.mdc .cursor/rules/
```

Or clone directly:

```bash
git clone https://github.com/olgasafonova/SkillCheck-Free.git
mkdir -p .cursor/rules
cp SkillCheck-Free/cursor-rules/skill-check.mdc .cursor/rules/
```
