# sema

## What it does

Sema arrives as an MCP server plus a skill called `sema-usage`, which Claude loads on its own. The skill tells the agent when to look a pattern up and when to mint a new one, how to drop handles into prose, and how to check meaning where agents hand work to each other.

Every pattern is addressed by its content. The hash is computed from the definition, so a changed wording yields a different address, and a quiet drift in meaning cannot pass unnoticed. The agent gets `sema_search`, `sema_lookup`, `sema_handshake` and nine more tools.

You need `uv` on the machine: it fetches the server and runs it in an isolated environment on the first call, then keeps it cached. A permanent route exists too, `pip install "semahash[mcp]"`. Private vocabularies stay local — `sema init ./mylib.db`, `sema use ./mylib.db`, `sema apply --add path/to/MyPattern.json` — and no pull request to the shared registry is involved.

Sema is a content-addressed reference system for reasoning and communication. Participants encode and hash information under an agreed representation, then reuse the content address as a verifiable reference, optionally paired with a human-readable handle. Matching full references establishes identity of the resolved hashed content; semantic equivalence, correctness, and enforcement remain separate questions.

## Install

### MCP Server (recommended)

Add to any MCP client (Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Claude Desktop):

This uses [uv](https://docs.astral.sh/uv/) to download, install, and run sema
in an isolated environment on first invocation, then caches it for subsequent
calls.

### Claude Code plugin (MCP server + skill)

Sema also ships as a Claude Code plugin — MCP server plus a skill that teaches the agent the search/resolve/mint/handshake workflow:

### Use with AI Agents (MCP)
