# pith

pith compresses tool output, tracks token use, and changes response modes as context fills. It fits long Claude Code sessions.

## What it does

pith adds four hooks to Claude Code. `PostToolUse` trims file reads, `bash` output, and `grep` results; `UserPromptSubmit` handles `/pith` commands; `SessionStart` restores the compression mode; and `Stop` records token usage. Large payloads move to `~/.pith/tmp/`, leaving a pointer in context.

Use `/pith status` for a token flow summary or `/pith report` for an auto-refreshing HTML dashboard. `/focus` loads the file sections related to a question, while `/pith symbol` extracts an exact function or class definition. The `LEAN`, `ULTRA`, and `PRECISE` modes control response shape. Wiki commands can ingest sources, answer cited questions, and compile pages.

The hooks are installed globally in `~/.claude/hooks/`, so they apply across sessions and projects. The evaluation command `python evals/harness.py` requires an API key; installation itself uses the Claude Code marketplace.

## How it works

Four hooks attach to Claude Code's lifecycle. Every session, every project, automatically.

- **`PostToolUse`** — compresses file reads, bash output, and grep results before they hit context
- **`UserPromptSubmit`** — runs `/pith` commands, enforces token ceiling if set
- **`SessionStart`** — restores compression mode, injects cache-locked rules
- **`Stop`** — records token usage for `status` and `report`

The `PostToolUse` hook is where most savings happen — file reads alone account for 30–50% of context in a typical coding session.

## Core features

### 1 — Auto compression (zero config)

Runs automatically. No commands needed. Every file read, bash run, and grep gets compressed on the way back to Claude.

### 2 — Output modes

Control how Claude writes back to you.

### 4 — Smart file focus

Load only the sections of a file relevant to your current question. Saves re-reading large files.

### 5 — Symbol extraction

Pull exact function or class definitions without reading the whole file.

Hooks install globally into `~/.claude/hooks/`. Active in every session from that point on.
