## What it does

firestore-native packages the prebuilt `firestore` MCP server from MCP Toolbox. An agent can work with Firestore databases, collections, and documents, inspect data structures, and produce data classes or code snippets from document layouts.

The setup needs Node.js, a Google Cloud project with the Firestore API enabled, and Application Default Credentials available in the environment. Grant `roles/datastore.user` and `roles/firebaserules.viewer`. Set the project with `FIRESTORE_PROJECT`; `FIRESTORE_DATABASE` can select another database, while `(default)` is used by default.

The plugin is in beta, so breaking changes may occur before v1.0.

## When to use it
- query Firestore data in plain language
- manage collections and documents from an agent
- inspect document structures before coding
- generate data classes from Firestore documents

## Example prompts
- Show me the collection structure in my Firestore database.
- Find the documents matching this condition and update them.
- Generate data classes from the Firestore document structure.

# Firestore Native

> [!NOTE]
> Currently in beta (pre-v1.0), and may see breaking changes until the first stable release (v1.0).

This repository packages [MCP Toolbox](https://github.com/googleapis/mcp-toolbox)'s prebuilt `firestore` server as a plugin/extension to interact with [Firestore](https://cloud.google.com/firestore/docs) databases. It can be used with various AI agents, including [Antigravity](https://antigravity.google/), [Claude Code](https://claude.com/product/claude-code) and [Codex](https://developers.openai.com/codex), to manage your databases, collections, and documents using natural language prompts.

## Why Use Firestore Native?

- **Seamless Workflow:** Integrates seamlessly into your AI agent's environment. No need to constantly switch contexts for common database tasks.
- **Natural Language Queries:** Stop wrestling with complex commands. Explore schemas and query data by describing what you want in plain English.
- **Data Management:** Manage your Firestore data directly from your agent.
- **Code Generation:** Accelerate development by asking your agent to generate data classes and other code snippets based on your document structures.

## Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have the following:

- One of these AI agents installed
  - Antigravity
     - [Antigravity CLI](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli) version **v1.6.0** or higher
     - [Antigravity 2.0](https://antigravity.google/product/antigravity-2) version **v2.0.0** or higher.
  - [Claude Code](https://claude.com/product/claude-code) version **v2.1.94** or higher.
  - [Codex](https://developers.openai.com/codex) **v0.117.0** or higher.
- [Node.js](https://nodejs.org/) — the MCP server runs via `npx`.
- A Google Cloud project with the **Firestore API** enabled.
- Ensure [Application Default Credentials](https://cloud.google.com/docs/authentication/gcloud) are available in your environment.
- IAM Permissions:
    * Cloud Datastore User (`roles/datastore.user`)
    * Firebase Rules Viewer (`roles/firebaserules.viewer`)

## Getting Started

### Configuration

Please keep these env vars handy during the installation process:

- `FIRESTORE_PROJECT`: The GCP project ID.
- `FIRESTORE_DATABASE`: (Optional) The Firestore database ID. Defaults to `(default)`.

> [!NOTE]
>
> - Ensure [Application Default Credentials](https://cloud.google.com/docs/authentication/gcloud) are available in your environment.

### Installation & Usage

To start interacting with your database, install the extension for your preferred AI agent, then launch the agent and use natural language to ask questions or perform tasks.

For the latest version, check the [releases page][releases].
