# domscribe

Click an element in the browser, describe the change in words, and the agent finds the file and line. Or let the agent query how that element looks live.

## What it does

Domscribe works in both directions. From the UI side you click an element in the browser overlay, type what to change, and submit. The plugin stores the element's source location, runtime context and your instruction as an annotation in `.domscribe/annotations/`; the agent claims it, opens the exact file and line, and edits. The agent's reply lands back in the overlay over WebSocket. From the code side the agent calls `domscribe.query.bySource` with a file path and line number and gets the live DOM, current props and component state straight from the running app.

Stable `data-ds` attributes are injected at build time via AST, so they survive HMR and fast refresh. React 18-19, Vue 3, Next.js 15-16 and Nuxt 3+ are supported, with Vite 5-7, Webpack 5 and Turbopack on the bundler side. Deep capture walks React fibers and inspects Vue VNodes. Emails, tokens and sensitive patterns are scrubbed before anything leaves the browser.

Agents don't query runtime state on their own — you have to ask for it. Your dev server also has to be running with the target page open, otherwise a source query returns nothing. All instrumentation is stripped from production builds, and CI enforces that.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-community
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install domscribe@claude-community
```

## When to use it
- resolve a clicked DOM element to its file and line
- read live props and component state before editing
- hand the agent a plain-English change from the UI
- check which CSS classes an element actually carries
- scrub emails and tokens from context before it reaches the agent

## Example prompts
- Fix the button color — use domscribe to check what CSS classes it has before changing anything
- Open `src/components/Header.tsx` at line 42 and show me what renders there live
- Read the annotation in `.domscribe/annotations/` and apply the change

---

**AI coding agents edit your source files blind — they can't see your running frontend, and your frontend can't tell them where to look.**

Domscribe bridges both directions: click a DOM element to tell your agent what to change, or let your agent query any source location to see exactly what it looks like live in the browser. Build-time stable IDs, deep runtime context (props, state, DOM), framework-agnostic, any MCP-compatible agent. Zero production impact.

## Getting Started

```bash
npx domscribe init
```

The setup wizard walks you through two steps:

1. **Connect your coding agent** — select your agent (Claude Code, Copilot, Gemini, Kiro, or others) and the wizard installs the plugin automatically.
