# defang

Ships a Docker Compose app to your AWS or GCP account from inside a Claude session. Useful when you would rather not wire up infrastructure by hand.

## What it does

The plugin adds the `/defang:deploy` slash command, which walks you through the whole path from a Compose file to a running service. The Defang CLI validates the project and uploads it to storage in your AWS or GCP account, a deployment task spins up there, and containers, DNS, load balancing and roles get provisioned. You can tail or query runtime logs with the same CLI.

Your code and secrets stay in your cloud account. Defang orchestrates the deployment; everything runs on your infrastructure. The MCP server turns on by itself once the Defang CLI is present, so there is nothing extra to register.

Without the Defang CLI installed, the MCP server will not activate — install it first. Options include Homebrew (`brew install DefangLabs/defang/defang`), a shell script (`eval "$(curl -fsSL s.defang.io/install)"`) or Go (`go install github.com/DefangLabs/defang/src/cmd/cli@latest`).

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS, Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-community
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install defang@claude-community
```

## When to use it
- deploy a Compose project to AWS or GCP without hand-building infrastructure
- run a deployment from a Claude session instead of a separate terminal
- provision containers, DNS and a load balancer in one go
- watch runtime logs of the deployed service
- keep code and secrets inside your own cloud account

## Example prompts
- Deploy my project from `compose.yaml` to AWS with `/defang:deploy`
- Walk me through the deployment steps and show the logs afterwards
- Create a new stack and deploy it to GCP

## Develop Once, Deploy Anywhere.

Take your app from Compose to a secure and scalable deployment on your favorite cloud in minutes.

1. **You write** a standard Docker **Compose** file
2. **Defang CLI** validates your Compose project and uploads the project to storage in your AWS/GCP account
3. **CD runs in your cloud** — a deployment task spins up in your AWS/GCP account
4. **Infrastructure is created** — containers, DNS, load balancing, and roles are provisioned
5. **Monitor** the deployment and tail or query runtime logs with the Defang CLI

Your code and secrets never leave your cloud account. Defang orchestrates the deployment, but everything runs in your infrastructure.

## Defang CLI

The Defang Command-Line Interface [(CLI)](https://docs.defang.io/docs/getting-started) is designed for developers who prefer to manage their workflows directly from the terminal. It offers full access to Defang’s capabilities, allowing you to build, test, and deploy applications efficiently to the cloud.

### Deploying with Defang

If you already have a Docker Compose file, create a new [stack](https://docs.defang.io/docs/concepts/stacks) and then deploy it. For example:

```shell
$ defang stack new
? Which cloud provider do you want to deploy to? AWS
? Which AWS region do you want to deploy to? us-west-2
? Which deployment mode do you want to use? AFFORDABLE
? What do you want to call this stack? awsuswest2
 * Created new stack configuration file: `.defang/awsuswest2`. Check this file into version control. You can now deploy this stack using `defang up --stack=awsuswest2`
$ defang up --stack=awsuswest2
```
