## What it does
claude-mem watches how tools get used in Claude, turns that into observations, and compresses them into semantic summaries. Later sessions can read those summaries, so you stop re-explaining the project after a restart or a reconnect.
One command does the install: `npx claude-mem install`. The installer sets everything up first, then asks you to sign in through a browser link sent by email — no card needed. After that you pick where memory lives: the claude-mem observer, your own OpenRouter or Gemini key, or your Anthropic plan. Want to skip sign-in? Pass a `--provider` flag, set `CLAUDE_MEM_ONLINE_OPTIN=false`, or run it in CI.
Node.js 20.0.0 or newer is required. Grok Bot is a separate path — `npx claude-mem install --ide grok-bot` — because it has no host hooks, so the plugin watches chat log files instead, and the local observer only turns on with `--provider host`. Worth knowing before you install: this plugin does not install Cursor.

- pull semantic summaries from past sessions instead of retelling the history
- choose where memory is stored: hosted observer, your own key, or your Anthropic plan
- run memory in CI without the browser sign-in
