## What it does

Everything runs through the Atlan MCP endpoint at `mcp.atlan.com/mcp`, so you ask in plain language and the agent picks the tool. Need a table, its upstream sources, or a glossary term fixed? That is the workflow.

Fifteen MCP tools ship with the plugin. Twelve are on from the start; the other three sit behind feature flags. Beyond search and lineage you get certification handling, validation rules you can schedule, and a way to sort assets into domains and data products. A skill named `atlan-search` tells the agent which tool fits a given filter — asset type, tag, owner, domain, quality — and loads only when the task needs it.

OAuth covers the connection, so no API key goes into your config. Local testing uses `claude --plugin-dir ./claude-plugin`. Keep in mind the repository's own MCP server is marked deprecated: it receives fixes only, and the hosted endpoint is the supported path.

## When to use it
- locate a data asset by describing it rather than guessing its name
- follow a dataset's lineage upstream and downstream
- attach glossary terms to the right assets
- set up a scheduled check on data quality
- group assets into domains and data products

## Example prompts
- List every asset tagged `finance` in Atlan with its owners
- Trace lineage for the `orders` table two levels upstream
- Add a quality rule so `customers.email` cannot be empty

This repository contains a collection of tools and protocols for interacting with Atlan services for AI agents. Each component is designed to provide specific functionality and can be used independently or together.

## Components

### Model Context Protocol (MCP)

An MCP server that enables interaction with Atlan services through tool calling. Provides tools for asset search, and retrieval using [pyatlan](https://developer.atlan.com/sdks/python/).

### Claude Code Plugin

The official Atlan plugin for Claude Code. Search, explore, govern, and manage your data assets through natural language, powered by the Atlan MCP server.

Connects to Atlan via OAuth at `mcp.atlan.com/mcp` - no API keys required.

**Features:**
- 15 MCP tools (12 enabled by default, 3 via feature flags)
- **Search**: AI-powered semantic search across data assets
- **Lineage**: Trace data flow upstream and downstream
- **Governance**: Manage glossaries, terms, certifications

### Skills

`skills/` holds the agent skills both plugins ship. A skill is instructions, not
code: it teaches the agent how to use the tool surface well, and loads only when
the task calls for it.

Both plugins read the same directory (`cursor-plugin/skills` is a symlink), so a
skill is authored once and shipped to Claude Code and Cursor together.

Skills are measured, not assumed: the golden-eval harness runs the same dataset
with and without them and diffs the scorecard per case. Adding or editing a
skill means running that A/B and quoting the delta.
