# wikimoth

wikimoth follows [[wikilink]] connections across Markdown notes and returns the linked path without an LLM retrieval call. Use it for agent memory.

## What it does

wikimoth reads a folder of Markdown notes whose relationships are written as `[[wikilink]]`. It follows those links across multiple hops, retrieves the relevant fragments, and exposes the note path behind the result. Retrieval is deterministic, so the same query follows the same path.

The MCP setup uses `wikimoth-mcp` through `npx`, with `WIKIMOTH_VAULT` and `WIKIMOTH_PYTHON` available for the vault and Python configuration. The store does not depend on a GPU or vector database, and retrieval itself does not call an LLM. Without `[[wikilink]]` connections, it cannot build a multi-hop route through the notes.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- Environment variables: `WIKIMOTH_VAULT`, `WIKIMOTH_PYTHON` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add --env WIKIMOTH_VAULT=<WIKIMOTH_VAULT> --env WIKIMOTH_PYTHON=<WIKIMOTH_PYTHON> --transport stdio wikimoth -- npx -y wikimoth-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add wikimoth --env WIKIMOTH_VAULT=<WIKIMOTH_VAULT> --env WIKIMOTH_PYTHON=<WIKIMOTH_PYTHON> -- npx -y wikimoth-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "wikimoth": {
            "command": "npx",
                "WIKIMOTH_PYTHON": "<WIKIMOTH_PYTHON>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:

            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values
### Gemini CLI
**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add -e WIKIMOTH_VAULT=<WIKIMOTH_VAULT> -e WIKIMOTH_PYTHON=<WIKIMOTH_PYTHON> wikimoth npx -y wikimoth-mcp

## When to use it
- trace related notes across several links
- show the notes behind an answer
- retrieve memory without an LLM call
- connect a Markdown vault to an agent

## Example prompts
- Use wikimoth to trace the notes that explain the authentication setup.
- Ask wikimoth which linked notes describe this API.
- Use wikimoth and show the note chain behind your answer about the project structure.
