## What it does

The server is built in Go. It connects an agent to WHOIS and RDAP protocols over HTTP, retrieving registration metadata for top-level domains, CIDR prefixes, and autonomous system numbers. Because of ICANN guidelines and GDPR rules, the tool strips out personal phone numbers, physical addresses, and owner emails from the output.

You can connect directly to the public demo URL without running local services. If you choose to host the Go application yourself via Docker, it uses in-memory caching by default and supports an optional Redis instance. When running locally without a reverse proxy, you must enable `localhostProtection` in `config.yaml` to defend the `/mcp` endpoint against DNS rebinding.

## Requirements
- Needs: a prebuilt binary from the repository releases
- Remote server: `https://whois.ddnsip.cn/mcp`

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http whois https://whois.ddnsip.cn/mcp
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
codex mcp add whois --url https://whois.ddnsip.cn/mcp
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "whois": {
            "url": "https://whois.ddnsip.cn/mcp"
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "whois": {
            "type": "http",
            "url": "https://whois.ddnsip.cn/mcp"
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
gemini mcp add -t http whois https://whois.ddnsip.cn/mcp
```

## When to use it
- inspect domain expiration dates and status codes
- look up CIDR prefixes and IP network assignments
- fetch registration metadata for an autonomous system number
- query RDAP records without shell-level whois packages

## Example prompts
- Check the registration status and expiry for github.com.
- Find the network owner for IPv4 address 1.1.1.1.
- Look up RDAP information for autonomous system AS13335.
