## What it does

This server supplies your client with tools to control browser sessions directly. It defines two methods: `browse` to navigate to links or trigger actions on existing tabs, and `close_session` to free allocated resources when browsing completes.

Execution happens over stdio via `npx` or as a background HTTP daemon using `webuplink-mcp-http`. The HTTP endpoint receives requests at `/mcp` on `127.0.0.1:3001` out of the box. Binding to external interfaces requires filling `MCP_HTTP_ALLOWED_HOSTS` to safeguard against unauthorized origins.

A valid `WEBUPLINK_API_KEY` token is mandatory, as the server cannot perform actions without it.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- A remote (HTTP) option exists: the address is in the README
- Environment variables: `WEBUPLINK_API_KEY` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add mcp -e WEBUPLINK_API_KEY=<WEBUPLINK_API_KEY> -- npx -y @webuplink/mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add webuplink --env WEBUPLINK_API_KEY=<WEBUPLINK_API_KEY> -- npx -y @webuplink/mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "webuplink": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
            ],
            "env": {
                "WEBUPLINK_API_KEY": "<WEBUPLINK_API_KEY>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "webuplink": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@webuplink/mcp"
            ],
            "env": {
                "WEBUPLINK_API_KEY": "<WEBUPLINK_API_KEY>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add -e WEBUPLINK_API_KEY=<WEBUPLINK_API_KEY> webuplink npx -y @webuplink/mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values

## When to use it
- fetch remote pages and inspect their contents in conversation
- trigger actions inside an active browser session
- shut down stale sessions to preserve memory
- expose browser tooling over a dedicated local HTTP endpoint

## Example prompts
- Load the target page using browse and retrieve its text content.
- Send a tool action to the active tab using our current session_id.
- Shut down session sess_987 with close_session to clean up.
