## What it does

VPNDetection gives an agent read-only tools to classify IP addresses and inspect database access. It can process a single address or a list, splitting long lists into batches. Database files cannot be fetched through these tools.

Each lookup includes `coverage`, which identifies the fields returned under the current plan. A missing field is not a negative finding. That distinction matters when an agent interprets the result. There is no `my_ip` tool: with a hosted connection, the server sees the intermediary's address rather than the user's. Local use requires Node.js 22 or newer. Without an API key, lookups return only `ip` and `is_vpn`; additional fields depend on the key and plan.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- Remote server: `https://mcp.vpndetection.io/mcp`
- Environment variables: `VPNDETECTION_API_KEY`, `VPNDETECTION_BASE_URL` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

1. **Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http mcp https://mcp.vpndetection.io/mcp
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add --env VPNDETECTION_API_KEY=<VPNDETECTION_API_KEY> --env VPNDETECTION_BASE_URL=<VPNDETECTION_BASE_URL> --transport stdio vpndetection -- npx -y vpndetection-mcp
## When to use it
- check whether an IP belongs to a VPN or proxy
- classify a list of addresses in one request
- inspect the fields available to an API key
- check an organization's database license status
## Example prompts
- Check `203.0.113.10` for VPN and proxy classification.
- Classify these IP addresses and return a result for each one.
- Show the fields my key can access and the database license statuses.
