# Vexor

Vexor helps an agent find files and code by meaning when their names have slipped your mind. Connect its MCP server to search a project from your coding client.

## What it does

Vexor creates reusable indexes for files and code, then searches them semantically. Its `vexor_search` tool returns matching source text with the results, while `vexor_index` starts an explicit index warm-up.

The server uses stdio and can run through `uvx vexor`. In Claude Code, register it with `claude mcp add` and pass the environment variables shown below. Configuration can include an API key and options for the embedding provider and ranking. The Vexor skill and MCP server share the same core capability, so choose one for each agent.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)
- Environment variables: `VEXOR_API_KEY`, `VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY`, `VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add --env VEXOR_API_KEY=<VEXOR_API_KEY> --env VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY=<VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY> --env VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON=<VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON> --transport stdio vexor -- uvx vexor
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from vexor <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add vexor --env VEXOR_API_KEY=<VEXOR_API_KEY> --env VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY=<VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY> --env VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON=<VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON> -- uvx vexor
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from vexor <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "vexor": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "vexor"
            ],
            "env": {
                "VEXOR_API_KEY": "<VEXOR_API_KEY>",
                "VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY": "<VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY>",
                "VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON": "<VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from vexor <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "vexor": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "vexor"
            ],
            "env": {
                "VEXOR_API_KEY": "<VEXOR_API_KEY>",
                "VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY": "<VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY>",
                "VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON": "<VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from vexor <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add -e VEXOR_API_KEY=<VEXOR_API_KEY> -e VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY=<VEXOR_REMOTE_RERANK_API_KEY> -e VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON=<VEXOR_CONFIG_JSON> vexor uvx vexor
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from vexor <command>

## When to use it
- locate a file by describing its purpose
- find relevant code without knowing its filename
- return matching source text to an agent
- prepare a project index before searching

## Example prompts
- Find the file that loads the API client settings.
- Search the project for code that parses configuration and show the matching source.
- Prepare a project index for semantic search.
