Equips AI agents with an append-only causal memory log and stops dangerous tool calls like database drops or force pushes before they execute.

## What it does

Vestige stores facts inside Strata, an append-only log. Every entry receives a cryptographic receipt upon save. If fresh context makes an older fact relevant, Retroactive Salience Backfill surfaces it for upcoming planning tasks. Lookups rely on exact identifiers and tags. Lookups avoid vector similarity entirely.

When an agent breaks code, `causal_walk` traces recorded dependencies backward to find the root cause. The `gather` command walks backward starting from a GitHub issue reference. The package includes Operator Lite, a tool call guard with 30 rules. Exactly 15 rules block operations like database drops or force pushes. Another 15 log suspect commands for manual review.

Installing Operator Lite requires Python 3. The installer inspects your past 30 days of agent commands to demonstrate what it would have blocked. The code is licensed under AGPL-3.0.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add vestige -- npx -y vestige-mcp-server
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add vestige -- npx -y vestige-mcp-server
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "vestige": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "vestige-mcp-server"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "vestige": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "vestige-mcp-server"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add vestige npx -y vestige-mcp-server
```

## When to use it
- Block destructive terminal commands like table drops and force pushes
- Record agent context in an append-only log with receipts instead of vectors
- Trace execution failures back to their trigger using `causal_walk`
- Resurface older relevant facts when related information arrives

## Example prompts
- Find the root cause of the build failure using `causal_walk` from issue #142.
- Save a note that Maya has a peanut allergy and link it to dinner plans.
- Review recent tool executions and report which actions Operator Lite stopped.
