## What it does

mcp-trino connects Trino and an AI assistant over MCP. It can run SQL, inspect execution plans, and browse catalogs, schemas, and tables. Query row limits and timeouts are configurable; read-only mode helps prevent data changes.

One server installation can connect to multiple Trino instances. When a metadata source is configured, the assistant can also see business descriptions, ownership details, and data quality information. Table views can include column samples and semantic context. You need Trino connection settings, including the server address, to query a warehouse. The Go library can also be used to build a custom MCP server with middleware and interceptors.

For Claude Code, the guide describes installing through Homebrew or downloading a binary, then configuring the MCP server. Docker and Go installation are also covered. Note that `trino_execute` accepts write operations; use `trino_query` for read-only SQL.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Install**
- The MCP registry has no launch command for it: see the repository README

## When to use it
- run SQL queries against Trino from an AI assistant
- inspect logical and distributed query plans
- browse catalogs, schemas, and tables
- show business metadata alongside query results
- connect multiple Trino instances through one server

## Example prompts
- List the tables in the `hive` catalog and `default` schema.
- Run a read-only Trino query and cap the number of returned rows.
- Explain the execution plan for this SQL query.
