## What it does

The server exposes Synology DSM endpoints as MCP tools for local agents. After initial setup, only File Station tools start enabled. This layer handles directory listings, file searches, moves, deletions, and archive downloads. DSM prevents downloading entire shared folders at once, so the tool refuses those calls outright.

System telemetry and Download Station modules remain dormant until you turn them on in `~/.config/mcp-synology/config.yaml`. Normal user accounts can read the model name, DSM build, uptime, and board temperature. Live disk throughput and CPU utilization figures demand an administrator login.

Download Station tools call the native DSM package. If that app is missing from Package Center, every related MCP tool call returns an `api_not_found` error.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add mcp-synology -- uvx mcp-synology
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mcp-synology <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add synology-nas -- uvx mcp-synology
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mcp-synology <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "synology-nas": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "mcp-synology"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mcp-synology <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "synology-nas": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "mcp-synology"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mcp-synology <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add synology-nas uvx mcp-synology
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mcp-synology <command>

## When to use it
- browse and search directories on a remote Synology NAS
- monitor NAS CPU load, disk throughput, and memory consumption
- queue download tasks directly into Download Station
- restore accidentally deleted files from the DSM recycle bin

## Example prompts
- Check the NAS uptime, RAM usage, and current disk temperatures
- List all files modified this week inside /projects/backup
- Pause the current download task in Download Station
