# Stratum MCP

Stratum runs agent tasks as tracked flows, checks completion conditions, and records an audit trail. Use it when a workflow needs explicit gates and verifiable steps.

## What it does

Stratum gives coding agents a stateful execution flow. The server validates a typed specification, returns the next step, then checks its postconditions when the agent reports completion. A failed check comes back with details the agent can use on a retry. Completed runs leave an audit record.

The TypeScript package includes the execution engine, an MCP server, and CLI commands such as `query`, `gate`, and `guard`. It accepts `version: 1` specifications, supports human approval gates, and can dispatch Claude and Codex agents within one flow. Stratum handles execution rather than the product lifecycle above it.

Node.js 22 or later is required. The Python engine and Python MCP server have been retired, and the current engine rejects legacy v0.x specifications.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add stratum-mcp -- npx -y @smartmemory/stratum
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add stratum-mcp -- npx -y @smartmemory/stratum
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "stratum-mcp": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@smartmemory/stratum"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "stratum-mcp": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@smartmemory/stratum"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add stratum-mcp npx -y @smartmemory/stratum
```

## When to use it
- break an agent task into checkable steps
- verify postconditions after each step
- pause a flow for human approval
- keep an audit trail across sessions

## Example prompts
- Plan these changes as a flow and check each step's completion conditions.
- Pause before this step so I can review the result.
- Show the execution audit and explain the failed check.
