## What it does

This server supplies 41 tools, 5 prompts, and 2 resources for querying Steam data. It remains strictly read-only. It never enters account credentials, launches binaries, initiates trades, or buys items.

You can use 19 tools immediately without any API key. The assistant queries storefront entries, live player counts, recent reviews, and Steam Deck verification tiers. To inspect personal libraries and friend lists, set `STEAM_API_KEY`.

Account queries fail if the target Steam profile is private. Passing `STEAM_USER` saves time by defaulting personal lookups to your own profile name.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)
- Environment variables: `STEAM_API_KEY`, `STEAM_USER`, `STEAM_MCP_TOOLS` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add --env STEAM_API_KEY=<STEAM_API_KEY> --env STEAM_USER=<STEAM_USER> --env STEAM_MCP_TOOLS=<STEAM_MCP_TOOLS> --transport stdio steam-read-only -- uvx steam-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from steam-mcp <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add steam-read-only --env STEAM_API_KEY=<STEAM_API_KEY> --env STEAM_USER=<STEAM_USER> --env STEAM_MCP_TOOLS=<STEAM_MCP_TOOLS> -- uvx steam-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from steam-mcp <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "steam-read-only": {
                "STEAM_API_KEY": "<STEAM_API_KEY>",
                "STEAM_USER": "<STEAM_USER>",
                "STEAM_MCP_TOOLS": "<STEAM_MCP_TOOLS>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from steam-mcp <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "steam-read-only": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "steam-mcp"
            ],
            "env": {
                "STEAM_API_KEY": "<STEAM_API_KEY>",
                "STEAM_USER": "<STEAM_USER>",
                "STEAM_MCP_TOOLS": "<STEAM_MCP_TOOLS>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from steam-mcp <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add -e STEAM_API_KEY=<STEAM_API_KEY> -e STEAM_USER=<STEAM_USER> -e STEAM_MCP_TOOLS=<STEAM_MCP_TOOLS> steam-read-only uvx steam-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from steam-mcp <command>
