## What it does

stacksfinder gives an agent tools for making technology choices and inspecting a project. It can group available technologies, compare alternatives, suggest a stack, and build an MCP project kit from a description. Repository analysis can also identify relevant MCP servers and prepare an `.env-mcp` credentials template.

Other tools cover project scope, pricing, and market analysis, plus technical-debt audits and migration suggestions. Several features work without an account, including a daily stack recommendation and project-kit tools. An API key is required for estimates, expanded recommendations, and audits, so those tools depend on `STACKSFINDER_API_KEY`.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- Environment variables: `STACKSFINDER_API_KEY` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add stacksfinder -e STACKSFINDER_API_KEY=<STACKSFINDER_API_KEY> -- npx -y @stacksfinder/mcp-server
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add stacksfinder --env STACKSFINDER_API_KEY=<STACKSFINDER_API_KEY> -- npx -y @stacksfinder/mcp-server
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "stacksfinder": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@stacksfinder/mcp-server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "STACKSFINDER_API_KEY": "<STACKSFINDER_API_KEY>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "stacksfinder": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@stacksfinder/mcp-server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "STACKSFINDER_API_KEY": "<STACKSFINDER_API_KEY>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add -e STACKSFINDER_API_KEY=<STACKSFINDER_API_KEY> stacksfinder npx -y @stacksfinder/mcp-server
```
Replace <…> with your own values

## When to use it
- choose a stack for a project brief
- compare several technologies side by side
- estimate project scope and pricing
- audit a stack for technical debt
- find MCP servers for a repository

## Example prompts
- Use `recommend_stack` to choose a stack for this SaaS project and explain the trade-offs.
- Compare `postgres`, `sqlite`, and `supabase` with `compare_techs`.
- Inspect this repository and suggest relevant MCP servers with `analyze_repo_mcps`.
