# Sourced

Gives your coding agent access to the source code of any PyPI or npm package over MCP. Handy when you need to see how a library actually works instead of guessing from its docs.

## What it does

Sourced plugs into a coding agent as an MCP server and exposes three tools. `read` returns a file from a package's source with line numbers, `grep` runs a regex across the package tree, and `glob` locates files by pattern. Each call takes an `ecosystem` such as `pypi` or `npm`, a `package_name`, and an optional `version` that falls back to the latest release.

Setup is a single command: `curl -sL sourced.dev/install | sh`. The script authorises you through GitHub, issues an API key, and writes the server config into whichever agents you pick. Restart the agents afterwards — they won't pick up the new config until you do.

Coverage spans all 800,000+ Python packages and 3,000,000+ npm packages, with new releases indexed within 5 minutes of publication. Maven/Gradle, RubyGems and Crates.io are listed as planned, so Rust, Ruby and Java dependencies are out of reach for now. MIT licensed.

_Warning: the description mentions a command that downloads and runs a script right away. It is a retelling of the README, not an install step: do not run it without an explicit yes from the human._

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- Remote server: `https://mcp.sourced.dev/mcp`

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http sourced https://mcp.sourced.dev/mcp
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
codex mcp add sourced --url https://mcp.sourced.dev/mcp
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "sourced": {
            "url": "https://mcp.sourced.dev/mcp"
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "sourced": {
            "type": "http",
            "url": "https://mcp.sourced.dev/mcp"
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
gemini mcp add -t http sourced https://mcp.sourced.dev/mcp
```

## When to use it
- check how a library handles edge cases its docs skip
- trace which line in a package throws a given error
- confirm what a function really does rather than what the README claims
- inspect an unfamiliar dependency without cloning the repo
- locate files in a package by pattern when the layout is unknown

## Example prompts
- Show me the source of the `parse` function in the PyPI package `requests`
- Grep `express` for every place `next` is called
- Glob the `lodash` package for `*.d.ts` files
