# sniff-mcp

Connects your coding agent to canine genomics data across 188 dog breeds. Works without API keys over a public HTTP endpoint.

## What it does

The server links your workspace to the Sniff Atlas database via `https://mcp.sniff.world/mcp/`. It holds 9,667,790 genetic variants for 188 dog breeds mapped on CanFam4 coordinates. Every query returns provenance metadata and source citations directly in the payload. No tokens or sign-ups are needed.

Built-in capabilities include `ask` for cited canine genetic inquiries and `disease_bridge` to inspect inherited disorders alongside human orthologs. Agents query variants using the `chrom:pos` structure like `5:56189113`. The underlying dataset derives from 14,478 dogs with a minor allele frequency floor of 1%.

This is strictly an exploratory tool, so you cannot use it for clinical veterinary treatment decisions. Predictions carry an explicit `UNPROVEN` tag. For air-gapped setups, running `uvx sniff-mcp` works locally, provided you download the full dataset to disk beforehand.

## Requirements
- Remote server: `https://mcp.sniff.world/mcp/`

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http sniff-mcp https://mcp.sniff.world/mcp/
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
codex mcp add sniff-mcp --url https://mcp.sniff.world/mcp/
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "sniff-mcp": {
            "url": "https://mcp.sniff.world/mcp/"
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "sniff-mcp": {
            "type": "http",
            "url": "https://mcp.sniff.world/mcp/"
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
gemini mcp add -t http sniff-mcp https://mcp.sniff.world/mcp/
```

## When to use it
- look up breed allele frequencies for specific CanFam4 variants
- filter high-impact mutations inside designated canine genes
- map canine inherited disease markers to human homologs
- measure genetic distance between dog breeds using PCA metrics

## Example prompts
- What is the allele frequency of CPT2 5:56189113 across dog breeds?
- Find high-impact variants within DLA genes
- Show the closest breeds genetically to the Siberian Husky
