## What it does

Sentinel is a monitoring service that plugs into an AI assistant as a remote MCP server. Nothing runs on your machine: the transport is Streamable HTTP and the endpoint is `https://sentinel.rootstuff.io/mcp/sentinel`. Clients with a browser sign-in flow use the OAuth 2.1 endpoint at `https://sentinel.rootstuff.io/mcp/sentinel-oauth`, which supports dynamic client registration.

There are 26 tools. The read side answers questions like what is down right now, and returns DNS record history, response-time trends, certificates nearing expiry, incidents, status pages, and a team roster with roles and 2FA state. The write side manages monitors and incidents: create, update, delete, pause, force a re-check, and organise monitors into groups.

Permissions live on the token. A write tool needs the matching create, update or delete permission, and a refusal names the one that is missing. Write tools also need a verified email on the account and share an hourly change budget across the team. `check-url-tool`, which checks a URL from every region, is paid-plan only. Everything is scoped to the authenticated user's current team, and deletes cannot be undone.

## Requirements
- Remote server: `https://sentinel.rootstuff.io/mcp/sentinel-oauth`

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http sentinel https://sentinel.rootstuff.io/mcp/sentinel-oauth
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
codex mcp add sentinel --url https://sentinel.rootstuff.io/mcp/sentinel-oauth
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "sentinel": {
            "url": "https://sentinel.rootstuff.io/mcp/sentinel-oauth"
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "sentinel": {
            "type": "http",
            "url": "https://sentinel.rootstuff.io/mcp/sentinel-oauth"
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
gemini mcp add -t http sentinel https://sentinel.rootstuff.io/mcp/sentinel-oauth
```

## When to use it
- find which client SSL certificates expire this month
- review uptime across all sites for June
- add monitoring for a new domain from chat
- work an incident and resolve it without the dashboard
- audit whether the whole team has two-factor auth on

## Example prompts
- Create a monitor for `https://client-site.com` and check it now.
- Check if `example.com` is up from every region.
