# SemanticOps MCP (for Power BI)

MCP server that gives AI assistants direct access to Power BI Desktop files. DAX measures, table relationships, model optimization — all through prompts.

## What it does

The server runs locally via `npx` and opens Claude, Copilot or ChatGPT programmatic access to `.pbix` files. You can read model structure, create and edit measures, manage table relationships, query metadata. All processing happens on your machine, no telemetry collected.

Works on Windows 10/11 and macOS, connects to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, Cline, Zed. License is proprietary but permits personal and commercial use.

The AI platform itself transmits conversation data to its provider (Anthropic, OpenAI) — that's independent of the server.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- Works with: Power BI

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add mcp-engine -- npx -y mcp-engine
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add semanticops-mcp-for-power-bi -- npx -y mcp-engine
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "semanticops-mcp-for-power-bi": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "mcp-engine"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "semanticops-mcp-for-power-bi": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "mcp-engine"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add semanticops-mcp-for-power-bi npx -y mcp-engine
```

## When to use it
- create a DAX measure via prompt
- read Power BI model structure
- manage table relationships
- optimize model performance
- query `.pbix` file metadata

## Example prompts
- Create a measure `Total Sales` in `sales.pbix`
- Show all relationships in the current Power BI model
- Optimize performance of `report.pbix`
