# Searchpin — Free Web Search for AI Agents

A self-hosted MCP server that searches several engines and fetches pages. It suits agents that need web research without API keys or quotas.

## What it does

Searchpin runs a local MCP server for web search and page retrieval. It queries Baidu, Sogou, Bing CN, and Bing Intl in parallel, combines the responses, then orders them by semantic similarity to the query. Search output stays compact, with titles, URLs, and snippets, while the agent chooses which pages to fetch.

The server can extract content from sites built with Next.js, Nuxt, and similar frameworks, along with JSON-LD and microdata. `web_fetch` identifies PDFs and returns locally extracted text with page labels. Extraction stops at 25 MiB, 200 pages, or 2 million characters. Image-only PDFs produce an error because OCR is outside the server.

Add it to Claude Code with `claude mcp add searchpin -- uvx searchpin`. The first launch downloads an embedding model of about 118MB through `hf-mirror.com` and keeps it in the local cache.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add searchpin -- uvx searchpin
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from searchpin <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add searchpin-free-web-search-for-ai-agents -- uvx searchpin
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from searchpin <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "searchpin-free-web-search-for-ai-agents": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "searchpin"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from searchpin <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "searchpin-free-web-search-for-ai-agents": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "searchpin"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from searchpin <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add searchpin-free-web-search-for-ai-agents uvx searchpin
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from searchpin <command>

## When to use it
- search across four engines in parallel
- rank results by meaning instead of URL order
- read content from Next.js and Nuxt pages
- extract page-labelled text from PDFs
- cross-check claims across independent search results

## Example prompts
- Search the web for current information about this library and compare the returned sources.
- Use `web_fetch` to read `https://docs.python.org/3/whatsnew/3.13.html` and list the relevant changes.
- Find a PDF about this project and return its text with page labels.
