# RepoRelay

Restricts AI models to reading and searching code inside a single local repository. Helpful when reviewing code without granting terminal or whole-disk permissions.

## What it does

RepoRelay establishes a guardrail around one designated folder on your machine. The connecting client gets access to four inspection utilities: `open_workspace`, `list_files`, `read_file`, and `search_files`. The model scans repository contents or filters for project instructions, yet it lacks process execution tools. Terminal access and Git execution are blocked.

Beyond search, standard operation unlocks three handoff writers: `write_next_task`, `write_review`, and `update_handoff_state`. These tools place reviewer notes into the `.ai-handoff` directory so an implementation agent can pick them up later. Direct file modifications remain blocked. Starting the process with `--no-handoff-writes` drops these extra writers entirely.

The runtime requires Node.js between `22.19` and `27`. Passing a disk root or an entire home folder will fail the boundary check.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add reporelay -- npx -y reporelay-mcp
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add reporelay -- npx -y reporelay-mcp
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "reporelay": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "reporelay-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "reporelay": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "reporelay-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add reporelay npx -y reporelay-mcp
```

## When to use it
- restrict AI exploration to a single local codebase
- prevent models from running terminal and Git commands
- locate setup guides using the `instructionsOnly` filter
- record implementation plans into structured `.ai-handoff` files

## Example prompts
- Inspect the repository structure with `list_files`
- Find database models using `search_files`
- Prepare the next development milestone with `write_next_task`
