# PyMemoryEditor

An MCP server on top of the PyMemoryEditor library: the agent scans a running process, reads values and writes new ones. Handy for game modding and debugging.

## What it does

PyMemoryEditor is a pure-Python library built on `ctypes` that opens another process's memory for reading, writing and searching. Its MCP server hands that loop to an AI assistant: it runs scans, refines matches and returns the address. Fourteen tools cover the workflow, and scan results stay server-side behind a handle, so a first pass with 40 000 hits costs a few tokens instead of your whole context.

Install it with `pip install "PyMemoryEditor[mcp]"`, then start the server with `pymemoryeditor-mcp`. The same package ships the plain library, a Cheat Engine-style GUI scanner via the `app` extra, and faster scans via `speed` with NumPy. It runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, 32-bit and 64-bit.

The server talks to other processes through OS-level APIs, so on Linux and macOS it needs permission to read another process's memory, and on Windows a sufficient access level. Point it only at processes you own or are authorized to test.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add pymemoryeditor -- uvx pymemoryeditor
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from pymemoryeditor <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add pymemoryeditor -- uvx pymemoryeditor
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from pymemoryeditor <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "pymemoryeditor": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "pymemoryeditor"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from pymemoryeditor <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "pymemoryeditor": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "pymemoryeditor"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from pymemoryeditor <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add pymemoryeditor uvx pymemoryeditor
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from pymemoryeditor <command>

## When to use it
- find the address holding a value in a running game
- read the current value at an address and write a new one
- narrow down matches after a first scan
- search memory for a byte signature or pattern
- sample variables from a live process without a debugger

## Example prompts
- Find the health value in my game's memory — it's 100 right now
- Scan `game.exe` for the value 100 and list the addresses
- Read the int at that address and write back a value 500 higher
