# Proxmox MCP

A read-only MCP server and CLI for Proxmox VE and Backup Server. It reports which client guests across your clusters have a verified recent restore point and which do not.

## What it does

The server hands your agent Proxmox data with read access only. Ask about backups and you get back the guests that have a confirmed recent restore point, plus the ones missing it. Handy once you run several client clusters and checking each report by hand gets old.

The installer puts two binaries in your user bin path: `proxmox-cli` for the shell and `proxmox-mcp` for MCP. Claude, Codex and Cowork pick up the skill from `SKILL.md`. Run `proxmox-cli --version` to confirm the install, then `proxmox-cli --help` after authenticating.

One hard limit: do not start HTTP mode (`--transport http`), not even on localhost. This build verifies a token, but request size and time limits are not in place yet, and a fix is promised in a later release. If you opened a tunnel for a remote agent, shut it down. Stick with the default stdio transport.

## Requirements
- Environment variables: `PROXMOX_HOST`, `PROXMOX_API_TOKEN`, `PROXMOX_TLS_FINGERPRINT`, `PROXMOX_PBS_HOST`, `PROXMOX_PBS_API_TOKEN`, `PROXMOX_PBS_TLS_FINGERPRINT`, `PROXMOX_BASE_URL`, `PROXMOX_CLUSTER`, `PROXMOX_CLUSTERS_FILE`, `PROXMOX_USER_AGENT` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Install**
- The MCP registry has no launch command for it: see the repository README

## When to use it
- spot guests with no verified recent restore point
- check backup state across every client cluster at once
- pull a Proxmox guest list into an agent without clicking through the web UI
- confirm the CLI and MCP install with a single command

## Example prompts
- List the guests in every cluster that lack a verified recent restore point
- Run `proxmox-cli --help` and tell me which commands are available
- Give me the Proxmox VE guests with their latest restore points
